Show V - The Centrum will be home to the Thunderbirds and Lady Birds as well as to conventions, and to a number of academic disciplines at SCISC. The Centrum For years college facilities have projected an image of being cold and gray, old and impersonal. But today, innovations are emerginng on college campuses which provide warmer, more personal spaces for people. Indeed, many new college buildings no longer can be readily identified as schools. More and more facilities are being designed with strong consideration to local materials, traditions, values and climates, reflecting the flavor of a geographic area rather than fitting the public image of what a college should look like. One such example is the new Centrum of Southern Utah State College, being hailed as a learning space of the future. The architects of the handsome combined special events center and classroom building have given careful attention to form, shape, surfaces and materials. Theyve created a building with multiple uses and have rearranged the traditional way a college uses its facilities, resources and people. The assignment given to the Centrum architects was to provide for classroom, laboratory, studio and special events needs of the growing college in a new structure that would be a good neighbor on an established campus. SCISC is enriched by a heritage of many buildings of historical character and others of modern design. In one bold stroke, the architects created a stunning building that is energy efficient, offers a variety of stimulating learning environments and harmonizes well with the surrounding A learning space of the future You can still invest in the Centrum for the SCJSCs Centrum has involved friends and alumni of the Fund-raisin- g College from all walks of life. Individuals and groups have rallied to provide funds. Seat sales in the building have raised more than $235,000, and some seats are still available. About 900 priority seat options have been sold or pledged so far, and a few remain available for sale. A seat in the Founders Circle is selling for $1,000 while seats in the Thunderbird Circle cost $250. Theie is no limit to the number of seats an individual may purchase. Donations to either circle will allow an individual to have his or her name placed on the seat(s) he or she selects after the Events Center is completed. The donor will also be allowed first chance to purchase that particular seat for SCISC sponsored events held in the Events Center. A plaque listing all Founders Circle and Thunderbird Circle members will be displayed in the concourse area of the building. To purchase a preferred seating option, anyone may call the SCJSC Development Office at (801) 586-777- campus. Sheathed in glassthe structure mirrors the other College buildings and landscape, and it serves to tie the campus together. SCJSCs Centrum will be a gathering place for students pursuing their studies as well as for people attending athletic events, convocations, and concerts, indeed, events of all kinds. Inside the distinctive facade will be an arena with seats. Positioned outside the 5,000 chair-bacarenas corridor, will be classrooms, art studios, a computer laboratory and a television studio the most modern of academic spaces. The essences of the building are the simplicity of the design and elegance of detail. Its distinctive identity is, nevertheless, compatible with the overall tradition of the campus. The Centrum is an ambitious building whose lively sequence of space reflects the changing character of higher education at k SCJSC. Rather than a freestanding gym or basketball center which some campuses have, the Centrum is a multi-usfacility supporting academic programs of the College. The Centrum can also be used for conventions which may be brought to southern Utah by the chamber of commerce. The Centrum is ideally located to provide meeting and assembly space for several thousand people. Its likely the Centrum will change the collegiate climate of southern Utah. Architecturally exciting and entirely unique as a multiple use facility, the Centrum will open e in 1986. |
