Show AN EARLY revelation REV ELAriON IN hn the book of jacob page in the cie original palmyra edition of the mormon bible printed in 1830 will be found the following 0 behold david and solomon truly had many wives and concubines which thing was abominable before anji m saith the lord wherefore W thus saith the lord I 1 have led the people forth out of the land of jerusalem by the power of mine arm that I 1 might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the loins of joseph wherefore 1 I the lord god will not suffer auger that th at this th laseer peo e 0 pie shall do like unto them of old wherefore e my brethren hear me and hearken to the word of the lord tor for there shall not any man among you have have save it be ewite on one wite and concubines he shall have none dorithe for Ithe I 1 the lord trod bod deligh teth in the chastity of women and whoredom is an abomination before me thus saith the loid of hosts wherefore this people s shall hall keep my commandments command commandments Lents saith the lord of hosts or cursed be the land for their sake for it if I 1 will saith the lord of hosts raise up seed unto me I 1 will command my people otherwise they shall hearken unto these things probably not many of the younger generation of cormons mormons have ever been permitted to see the above for it is apparent at a glance that mat it does not correspond with what they are arc being taught now but that was from the pen of joseph smith it was as much of a revelation as anything he ever wrote the foregoing is clipped from the salt SaIt lake tribune of tuesday february aryul 9 it shows how much the writer knows of his subject he is never more absurd and an object of ridicule than when he attempts to elligh enlighten ten the mormons cormons Mor mons in regard to their creed or lecture young utah upon matters which they know much better than he can tell them in the first place few if any of the younger g generation e iteration of mormons cormons Mor mons ever see the paper in which those ebullitions of ignorance appear and in the next place if they did they would only laugh at his impertinence and in attempting to belittle their faith in things that they do not believe in the above quotation from the book of mormon he supposes is only to be found in the original palmyra edition ai if he will borrow a copy of any edition of the book of mormon he will find the identical passage therein and further he will discover no changes iu in the text in the present or any other edition from that of the first then if lie he will go to any sunday school of the latter day saints and there are a g dieal eat many iu in this city he will find the book yf of mormon containing that same palage pasc age and learn that the r of mormons cormons Mor mons aiu in U chinks fh inks huv e never been permitted to 10 see it are more familiar with it and understand it a great deal better than he does atler disposing of his mares nest and showing that there is nothing hidden or mysterious or to be kept from the younger generation in the wonderful derf ua paragraph which he has discovered we will now examine lais his comments he says the above does not correspond with what the mormons cormons Mor mons are bein being taught now he is mistaken again nat that is j just us t exactly what they are being taught now in sunday schools mutual improvement associations ciati ons and general meetings he says it is from the pen of joseph smith and as much of a revelation as anything he ever wrote there is a slight difference which the younger generation of the mor mons understand well enough but which we will point poin out lor for his benefit joseph did not write that paragraph he translated it lud some onu one else eise wrote loth hoth the original brigina land and tue translation it il is not a revelation to the latter day saints in the same sense as the revelation on celestial marriage it is the translation of part of a sermon preached by the prophet jacob to the Nep bites and only applied applied to them in their own time an and la in their own circumstances they were not allowed to have more than one wife because they committed whore doms people who are so corrupt are ilot hot fit for plural marriage they justified themselves in their wickedness by the things written concerning david and solomon wherein n those men transgressed such as david with bathsheba and solomon with 61 strange women their acts were an abomination to the lord the Nep bites hites were told that they should not have more than ove one wife but the closing sentence in the above paragraph explains that this command was only to them and that other laws might be revealed for tal if I 1 will saith the lord of hosts raise up seed unto me I 1 will command my people otherwise they shall hearken unto un to these things the revelation on celestial ma marriaga marri ag given direct to the latter day saints is in fulfillment fulfilment f and consonance with that sentence the lord desired his people to raise up seed to him so lie he commanded them until he so commanded they like the people to whom that prohibition was given hearkened unto enose things 1 the intimation that he be would so command is in chebook the book of mormon the command that he has given eiven in accordance with the intimation is in the book ot of doctrine and covenants but the would be pre preceptor of the younger youner generation of mormons cormons Mor mons wants them thein to believe that the later revelation Is evidence that the lord ills his mind not at all he merely gave a com commandment commanding mandin e u t under certain circumstances to a people peo p le who lived over years ago and has given a different commandment under different circumstances to a different people who live in this age age of the able world to the early israeli lea he gave a law of carnal commandments adapted to their condition to the people eople in christs time he save gave a totally different law the almighty adapts his commands and precepts to the conditions of those to whom they are revealed and even in the same period what would be right and binding upon some persons might not be required of or be proper in others not because deity changes his in i uda but because mens conditions capabilities bili ties and circumstances are not all the same the writer who wants to enlighten young utah may thus perceive that his bis reasoning is on a par with his discovery the wonderful disclosure of a former revelation and the noi tion that it Is in conflict with w what h at is taught now are characteristic emanations from a source that is always misleading generally so sophistical his and abid often densely ignorant of of the subjects it attempts to elucidate |
