region resulted iu in our eliciting from him a few facts that will probably interest I 1 our readers sevier valley is a most pea peculiar ullar place situated in the midst of a country that seldom escapes the usual snow fall and frost incidental to such altitude and latitude it enjoys a most remarkable exemption from these wintry visitations that we have never yet found anyone capable of explaining the reason of Zata naturally rally sevier valley is perhaps the driest part of utah much of the soil there appears never to have been soaked with water especially is ahlis the case with the bench land that slopes gently down from the mountains on either side of the dajley towards the river when canals and water ditches are made to convey the irrigating fluid over anch land in that valley the inhabitants always calculate on the land settling as the water is made to flow over and soak into it f from rom one to three feet in depth this results at first in great inconveniences in the contour of the country owing to some patches getting soaked and settling sooner than others but it gradually resumes a mote moie level appearance pe arance as the soaking becomes general but little snow balls in the vil valley ley and the frost is seldom severe so tha outdoor work way may be carried on without inconvenience all winter long in fact winter is the principal season for building houses and constructing canals and roads in that part during the past winter a good deal of work of this character has been accomplished complis hed in fact during daring the months of january and february the weather was so fine that a great deal of farm work was done ilso also and a large breadth of barley barlev was sown one canal which branches off from the river at joseph city and which is to extend to willow creek a point about four miles north of richfield has hag been worked upon all winter and is now almost completed to elsinore EIs lnore where it will ie be utilized during the coming season in irrigating about 1000 acres of the excellent bench land situated between that settlement and the foothills it will probably not be completed to willow creek before a year from now when it is several thousand acres of the very best land in the valley will be brought under cultivation by it another canal extending from a point on the river immediately east of richfield to redmond the northernmost settlement of the county ha hasi also salso been the scene of a large amount of labor during thelast the past winter it is now completed to te vermillion about ten miles north field when these two canals are finished it is expected that ample facilities will be provided for tile the many young people of the county to branch out ont for themselves and also room afforded for a good many new comers to obtain excellent farms in the settlement of sevier valley the poorest land was taken up first because it happened to be the most accessible ces sible to water but now that the people have grown strong enough to construct canals to irrigate the bench beach land much of the bottom land taken up first is bein being converted into meadows and pastures for which it is better ketter adap adapted d than for tilling mug sevier valley is really one of the most desirable locations in the territory tile the cultivated land yields abundantly of the various kinds of cereals and roots loots and it is also well adapted for the ral raising tring of fruits of all kinds that nourish flouri sli in these northern reif ree ions lons while the surrounding hilli and mountains afford art an ex excellent cellen t range for cattle horses and sheep to the culture of which the people of that region realon devote a good deal of attention the horses especially of that county are noted for being among the best raised in the territory brother joseph A young many years ago introduced trod some excellent blooded animals into that country countr y the products of which have no now w become pretty generally scattered among the marions settlements and the start towards grading up the native horses then made has been followed loll owed up by the importation of Hamb letonian lexington and norman stallions so that t h at now scrub horses are decidedly at a discount there and are becoming every year more scarce the sheep herds of which there are quite a number are also being graded up by keeping kee piner only merino bucks and hiva havo already attained a goodly degree of perfection in addition to the other good strains of horned s stock toe k ral raised sed I 1 in it the co county u n tv in the past s a number of holstein buila ach and heffers heifers e cifers have lately been purchased by stock owners in that region region and good results are anticipated from brom I 1 the ci crossing of them with other breeds breeda as well as from propagating this special breed on the ei excellent ranges of that part in rabbit and grass valleys lying east of the sevier the snow has fallen to a much reater greater depth than usual the past winter and as a result stock there are lo 10 looking 0 king very thin though few deaths are reported among them |
