fine in wh which ch he be arrived at the conclusion that he could not mr groos fine was therefore paid for him and he was set at liberty having been confined 30 days longer than the period for which he was sentenced another release this morning brother chas L white who was sent to the penitentiary on oct 0 6 1885 for refusing to renounce a principle of his bis religion and who has served 30 days more than the period of sentence was brought before commissioner mckay and after having undergone a rigid examination as to his not having any property exempt from execution he took the required oath and was set at liberty he like the others who have suffered imprisonment for conscience sake has no regrets at having proven true to his convictions the davenport case the demurrer of the defendant in the case of the people vs fanny davenport for keeping beeping a house of ill fame was argued before judge zane yesterday afternoon the point at issue being as to whether counsellor counsel for defendant defend ani could enter a plea for their client or not the mat ter was submitted to the court who took it under advisement and this morning district attorney dickson moved that the plea of the defendant beeaker betakes be takes which was a virtual confes sion of the demurrer jud judge ge hoge of counsel for the defendant fen dant claut waived the reading of the indictment and asked that a plea of not guilty be entered the court asked Is the name in the indictment your true name causing caning a general titter and mr hoge replied that fist it was the clerks fault if it was not right Mr Dickson then asked that the other indictment charging the defendant with selling liquor in violation of law be read out but as judge hoge did not appear as counsel in that case the matter ditter was postponed until monday interfering with jurors today to day mr john M young who when being eya examined mined as to his qualifications as a juror in the morris morria mammoth suit ats stated ted that he had bad been spoken tb by one of the parties was called up by judge zane and further interrogated on the subject he stated mr J A cunningham ning ham of the mammoth mining co had bad approached him previous to the tria and asked whether he had bad been excused from serving as 49 a juror for the term mr young replied that he had botand not and mr cunningham remarked that he be was glad of it as he was interested te in a case coming up for trial after learning these facts judge zane said that while there was probably not enough in this to warrant thel arrest of cunningham Cunning bam still he considered that a man who would thus approach one whom he knew to be a juror was corrupt and dishonest and was anything but deserving of the confidence of the community the judge further stated that he be was determined to put a stop if possible to any attempts to influence jurors brors and th that at one of these days men guilty of such a course would find themselves hem knew the goods were stolen when they were offered f for or sale A pleasant affair brother W G phillips who for some time past has boen been acting as counselor to the superintendent in iu of the ward sunday school was tendered a reception last evening in the school house bouse of that ward by his fellow superintendents and teachers as also by the larger scholars of the school and many of the parents of the ward who had been invited to attend the object was to manifest to brother phillips who is about to start on a mission to england the appreciation entertained for his bis services in the that the lady for or whom he be had bad asked was not pres preb aint nt he be asked the girl who is only only 13 year age to go out riding with him this soe she promptly refused to do when made some
