yardman yard men they were immediately put to work moving blockaded freight lathe in the wabash yards and everything is now moving along as smoothly as if there never had been a strike ST louis 9 crowds of strikers formed at the relay depot in east st louis at this afternoon and advanced in the direction of tile the railroad yards to stop work by the new men employed there they were met by the guard of deputies who ordered them to disperse the mob refu refused fad and made a rush for the yai maids ds when the deputies levelled bevelled level led their winchesters Win chesters and fired killing six of the strikers ST louis louia 9 the deputy guit guards rols stationed at the louisville and andrash nashville yards near broadway fired into a crowd crow d of strikers about this pm five men and one woman were shot three men were killed and the woman is supposed to be mortally wounded the killed are pat bristol an employed of the water works and not a strikers striker oscar worthington a painter john bohman a waterworks water works laborer not a striker major richman was shot in the head and shoulder and will probably die mrs john pfeiffer was wab shot in tile the back and probably mortally wounded an unknown man was shot at the bridge approach the crowd made no a attack on the yards as first reported but were stan standing dirig on cahokia bridge near the the railroad about one hundred yards from cahokia bridge and was carried by her husband to the drug store on broadway near the crossing where she is now in a critical condition major richman bichman and one truck went to east st louis and I 1 followed quickly myself remaining there until after one when being unable to find the mayor or any authorities able to protect us and after repeated cutting of our hose and continuous intimidation of on our men I 1 ordered their return immediately on receipt of your telegram I 1 ordered assistant Jt chief gross to report to you in person and to place several engines at your disposal with the services of himself and men he will see you before the receipt of this and it if necessity still exists will already have furnished you the aid you request if with the presence of the military which is guarding all the wain main lines of track diverging from the relay depot something jibe order appears to promise for ane day it is not possible at this hour to more than approximate the damage by the nights tires they were all confined to railroad property and the officers sent with the troops report that about 20 to 80 30 cars in all were destroyed which were loaded with merchandise and coal the greatest damage occurred at the cairo short line yards about one mile from the relay depot where probably 15 cars were destroyed and the flames for a time threatened the destruction of one or two hundred cars in the immediate vicinity the yards were unprotected by the presence of an active deputy or officer of any kind and guptil company D of champaign arrived at the scene the fire was permitted to burn at its will two members of this company were found who could fire are aud and run a locomotive and a switch engine being placed at their disposal they succeeded in dragging drag gigg away from the burning cars fully box and coal cars three companies of troops are now stationed at the louisville and nashville and cairo short line yards the main body of the troops beyond the few sentries stationed at the railroad switches remain in the vicinity of the relay depot no serious opposition of any character has beset the troops EAST ST louis 10 a am m no disturbance tur bance has occurred since 5 this morning at afew a fe w ot of the railroad crossings and ad at the street corners there have been small gatherings of discontented beut men but they are quietly dispersed dis eased by the sentinels the sheriff aas has dismissed all of his deputies with the exception of three por or four men inen depending entirely upon the troops under their protection all of the platform men and yardman yardmen of the burlington road have cretu returned arned and freight trains are moving this morning without molestation Two freight trains arrived over the same road this thin morning A portion of the men employed on in t the chicago alton and ohio and aud mississippi roads have returned and they are handling without difficulty all the freight f offered incoming passenger trains over all ail the roads without exception arrived close to schedule time and were sent over the hr bridge d e t into the city the bridge T transfer co also sent over to St stlouis Louls a train atrain of coal cars the bridge company has all of its twenty switch engines fully manned and but loathe absen ceaf their yards switchmen would be able to handle both freight and passenger trains without delay the superintendent of the bridge company stated this morning that had governor ogles oglesby by sent a small body of troops here when first requested none of the men would have been intimidated and would have remained at their posts A few railroad officials have dhere on duty but in the contusion confusion and ana alarm occasioned by the tires last night
