He will take case histories, treat cuts and minor injuries, give simple exams, change dressings, physical handle sutures and casts, administer injections. He will assist the physician during surgery. Just like the MEDEX, the practicing physician had to fulfill essential criteria to be chosen as a preceptor (or teacher) for one year. Not only did the doctor have to be busy and overworked in primary care and general medicine, but he had to be interested and willing to teach and to innovate or change m his his practice; stable, community; able to provide continuous supervision while the MEDEX is in training (for one year), willing to hire the MEDEX upon completion of his training, willing to participate fully in evaluation procedures and under 60 years of age. The doctor will keep a supervisory eye on his MEDEX treatments and constantly review his work. While the MEDEX undertakes the routine, but necessary, tasks, the physician will, in turn, have more time to devote to more seriously ill patients and to and community education continuing health problems. Simultaneously, greater numbers of patients will receive medical services and health care. He is a stabilizing influence on the City Commission! He is a proven administrator! February.
