Show communicated THE NEGROES AND THE MORMONS monday nights nighta dispatches from washington inform us that in res ponee to a cill call of several leading men an assemblage asEem blage biage of persons one third white packed tho the hall in which the meeting was waa held and as many more were unable to secure entrance and that fred douglas col robert ingersoll Inger coil eoll judge shells barger and rev or dr rankin made speeches denouncing the decision of tho court as to the ancon of the civil rights bill this thia is ia not with a aview view of ing the action of the honorable gen who took part in tho the exer cinea chat nae rac eting or of those at J whose instigation the meeting was callejas cal cai called ledas as it Is the privilege of all men to defend their rights in a lawful manner but merely to call attention to the fact that it makes a great difference whose rights are invaded and who are the parties that resent the invasion whether such action as that which forms the subject of the dispatch Is ia endorsed and aided by influential parties when the tho cons constitutionality ti tu of the act of 1862 was questioned even before the doci decision slon sion of the supreme court declaring it to be h constitutional the parties liberties and rights were moal most affected by it were denounced by religion ests and politicians politician slandered by the press prees and repudiated as aa disloyal by many who laid claim tz to legal learning and when the act was by peculiar constructions and distorted declared to be valid then the politicians and the press marked out the path of the poly galiata as one of mute submission any one who presumed to ta question the legal acumen or impartial judgment of the court was ut at once denounced as in rebellion to the government ern ment it has been decided said they theys by the highest tribunal of the land and must be received without question or comment now the country Is informed that pore pere persons ons among whom were representative speakers from the various cia cla classes saes orators of acknowledged ability both white and colored have havo met and and denounced a de decision elsion of tho the same court which gave a rellious boly body over to the buffet tings of their poll political bics tics pera persecutors acu ecu tors and we venture to say that many thou thousands bands sands will praise the pluck of the colored people eulogise eul ogise their political ardor and join in a tirade of condemnatory critic lem on the highest tribunal for the lack of legal lega 1 qualification ability displayed why this dimmer differ differences encel it the first place the colored element is regarded in political quarters quartets as aa an influence to be counted for election purposes it makes no diffie difference ronce rence as to the color of the voters so that the votes amm ama all right the traces are emual in the court hence it is very desirable that something be ba done to secure them the colored population of the united baates numbering as it dots about five millions of people is a quite a subject when for lor the residency presidency are so nearly neaily equal as in recent years numbers are the great want just now while the cormons mormons Mor mons numbering perhaps at mast with no state gov ez eminent aument are notwithstanding their theli intelligence and ability at present a in mere ere cipher jn in the pre presidential eiden campaigns the negroes with their millions are more precious in the hight bight ol of the politician and if secured may tip up LIP the scale for the party that pets them the most hence the men of political prudence come out in force and with oratory from the lips of antagonistic races with epithets and philli pies of both chrls christian tian and gragan pagan origin uttered by a co mingling of ministers and nd infidels throw the weight of popular indignation in favor of the stronger element this is quite natural and has been done dona in pretty much the someway same bame way throughout centuries of darkness and ages of treachery it has even been regarded as the tho pro per thing to do and kings have rewarded it with titled eats esta estate teg and presidents with 61 positions of trust and profit but it is strikingly singular that in an age of advanced thought of refinement and culture such palpable should be made without an effort at least to conceal the invidious distinction can any thin thinking hing king person tell why the negroes rights are to be deemed more sacred than those of the cormons mormons Mor mons why public indignation sh should ouid be race when their political standing Is in aured by judicial action and yet vet all ali submit while the tho religious right of a portion of the white race are being trampled under underfoot foot are we drifting dr ft back tu the conditions from which we emerged with gladness when we shook off the shackles eha chlea of european bondage and uttered the welcome cry of liberty let ri statesmen and philosophers answer we believe and will ever maintain that liberty untrammeled and unfettered is one of the tho inalienable rights of man and as such we will defend it whether it be attacked by priest or politician and regardless of tho the color or creed of the class claes whose rights are invaded 8 |
