French Film Lot Resembles Big Family Reunion (Editor'! notDorothy ii on vacation. Her, guest columnist today is the !tar of Ben Hur, Stephen Boyd ) - . NEW YORK Boyd writes: The main difference tween making movies In France and making mov-le- s in Bollywood Is that old Gallic feeling- Paris b studios are T f T compact, com- - , 1 pared to the Mr. Boyd sprawling fa- cilities of the 20th Century-Fo- x studios, foe example. This, among other things, encourages the family atmosphere on a Paris movie set. Included in the other .things are the French studio workers themselves. French crews are proficient, their sets are marvels of excellent detail. But a Hollywood producer or efficiency expert upon entering a French studio for the first time just as the working day begins would either lose his mind or resign on the spot Huge Family Reunion As the workers starts arriving on the set, the atmosphere is one of a huge family reunion. Everybody shakes hands with everybody else. Set carpenters put down their tools and greet each new arrival, from producer Darryl Zanuckto the company messenger boy, with the polish of opera goers on an important first night. Each madame and mademoiselle is kissed on both cheeks by every member of that unit. On watching them, a visitor' would hardly think that these same people had bid each other au revoic" just the night before. And on Mondays, the kissing and handshaking is especially enthusiastic and prolonged. Has Own Theory Director Richard Fleischer, who Is directing me in The Big Gamble" for his second French assignment, ventures a theory of his own about all the felicitations. He says theyre probably congratulating each other on having emerged alive from the crazy Paris traffic. Fleischer and Zanuck are credited with starting another studio custom which helps to encourage that old Gallic feeling. They started it while making Crack in the Mirror and it has now been adopted by other companies filming in Pans. The companies work Saturdays and after work on' that day a small set party is held, with food and re freshments supplied by the producer, director, different stars, or department heads. Light Refreshments They term it an aperitif and that, in fact, is what it it Usually, the refreshments are beer, wine or a light e-dinner drink. The food is an interesting variety of light snacks. But the gaiety and conversation are tremen- from producer .to janitor, who is host for that particular evening. The festivites of start promptly at the-enshooting and end just as promptly one hour later, when everyone leaves. Contrary to general supposition, nobody cherishes Sunday with his family more than average Frenchman and he begins it as early as possible. Shooting Hours Of course, the- - one big difference that Hollywood actors and actresses love are the French shooting hours. In the American studios, the shooting hours, are nine to six. This isnt so bad for the men, but it means that actresses must report to the make-udepartment any time between 5:30 and 6 a.m depending on what the role hair-ddemands in make-up- , and wardrobe. In Paris, the filming hours are from noon to 7:30 p.m. You arrive on the set having had your lunch or counting on a chance to grab a bite at the first change in set ups.
