Tbosteson, M.D. By Evelyn Mazuran Edi'or, Living Section On a certain Friday afternoon in Bill Bayes was at his office on South Dear Dr. Thosteson: Two years ago my husband developed a dry cough. But then, a few hours later, Bill Bayes put on his other face, and he was His other face is that of Speedie the Skating Clown, lovable representative of the El Kalah Shrine Temple in Salt Lake City. That particular Friday evening, Speedie was to appear at the Salt Palace, where the big Shrine Circus was performing. Two weeks earlier, he had been in Sacramento, Caiif., skating in a big parade as part of the Western States Shrine convention. And just before that hed been up to Salt Lakes Shriners Hospital, spreading cheer among the crippled children. thats Bringing happiness to children what Bill Bayes loves to do. Thats why he thoroughly enjoys donning a clown face (it takes two hours to apply the makeup), r colorful striped costume, a plumed flowerand then making pot hat, roller skates children (and adults) laugh. , well-know- n which was negative. we wonder what to do next. Immediately, his heart was in it. He wanted Speedie to be out of the ordinary, and so he added the skating routine, which after all. wasnt too hard to do since Bill had been Utah State roller skating champion back in 1938. Speedie was the first clown in Utah to become a member of Clowns of America. He also is ambassador-at-larg- e for the National ShrinelClown Assn. Clown and giving candy to delighted youngsters. Flowers that bloom Bill. that is, has skated Speedie in every western state, in Hawaii and Mexico at various Shrine conventions. (Just recently he was invited to perform in Las Vegas. Other commitments made it impossible.) Bill finds his continuing visits with hospitalized children especially rewarding. He takes magic acts along and lets the children participate. They love it, of course. Hes always preparing new acts, just now is learning ventriloquism, has ordered a wooden dummy made to his specifications, should be using it by fall. The most likely, Speedie Jr., dumdivs name and hell wear a clown suit. Sometimes Bill leaves his Speedie outfit at home and entertains as a mimic, singer even does monologues. Have some in pots on the patio, too. The hanging-bask- ers are beautifully ruffled, some plain petaled, and some recurved. They make handsome flower arrangements or a rainbow in the border. For flowers all summer, plant glads every 10 days. caladiums are foliage plants with big, varied leaves in gated different patterns and many Fancy-leave- d heart-shape- red, rose, pink, white, with contrasting veins and edges, very handsome in the border. lime-gree- They keep their colors better in shade, the sun tending to bring out the green. Bulbs planted directly in the border will produce colorful plants in less than a month. EAT AND LOSE WEIGHT forms, displayed in planters, on a wall, in a window box, send down a cascade of blooms pink, white, all red, yellow, or apricot summer long, a glorious sight. He and Speedie talked for 15 minutes. That was worth everything to me, Bill recalls. Ill never forget it. In fact, that was the first and only time that Speedie the Skating Clown ever broke down and cried. With great gusto, Speedie began his comical skating routine twisting, twirling, turning round and round . . . taking big, sweeping strides forward, then backward . . tiny staccato steps to the left, to the right with all the fun and abandon youd expect from a happy clown. A few days later. Bill Bayes the CPA sat at his desk and talked of the wonderful times hes experienced as Speedie the Skating Clown. To me, its a thrill to make children happy, to see them smile, their eyes sparkle. Its beautiful! They have a different kind of expression when they see a clown. A different kind of happiness.
