You can het it wasn't in coach Roy Whitworth's game plan, but you can also bet he'll take it just the same. ! Take what? Three points on a ; Barry McKee field goal with 02 remaining in the game which gave Bingham a 4 photo-finis- h win over Brighton in Region Two football, Wednesday. In a effort not unlike the famed touchdowns executed 'by such greats as Johnny Unitas or Bart Starr , the Miners took ; possession on their own Hine with but 2.30 remaining in the 14 14 game. Tailback Steve Wanless took 'the first crack sweeping the left end for 24 yards. Then quarter- back Steve East promptly hit over-theWanless on a middle pass Another East pass "went in and out of the hands of Jeff Larsen, but Larsen redeemed himself on the next play by .'picking up nine yards through W ith 0: 14 left ' Brightons line. ' McKee ground out the first down, and it was time for the do or die field goal. McKees boot sailed through the uprights, the ensuing Bingham celebration, with .02 remaining brought them an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. But little did the Miners care (or the contest was all , even know) but over. They (Brighton) beat us as sophomores and 13--7 as , ; juniors, Whitworth said post game. So I figured they had a six point advantage today. But I told ,our kids this time it's our turn. Bingham drew first blood on a Jeff Larsen TD run, but j halftime, Bingham was on the - bottom of a score. Brightons Cay Dent and Matt Seeman had each found paydirt to move the "JJngals into the advantage. Rory Romero hauled in a pass to bring the Miners within one, and McKee tied it with the PAT ! setting the stage for his last ' minute field goal win. Brad Ball scored twice, and -;Tim Fiack and Brad Neilson each scored once in the effort which saw the Lancers garer 46 points before Kearns even got a first .down. Orem, behind a strong defense and a consistent offense, minutes - moved to a 27-- lead with only remaining in the contest before giving up two last minute Jordan t touchdowns. Trailing 6 at the half, Olympus came out of the lockers reborn (to use a fashionable term) and literally rode the Colts to the ground. . .or better, across the ground. We knew we could do it, said Titan running back, Rob Ward, "so we went out that second half and made it happen. Ward was already making it happen in the first. The 175 pound bruiser had 61 yards rushing at the midway gun, then put together 123 m the second stanza It was Ward who put the Oly eleven ahead to stay with an eight-yarjaunt, then pushed in another to lock things away. When the pistol went off at the end of the third period, Olympus had come up with 145 third quarter yards to Cottonwood's nine. The Colts came out trying to move the ball through the air, but Oly perked up on defence, with Dave Neff leading the charge. The Eagles stul haven't given up a point this year, and theyre averaging over 20 points a game. Wednesday, East caught the wrath. Punishing the Leopards with their ground game, the Skyhners got a pair of TDs from Ken Wadsworth, one from Tracy Duckworth and another from David Weixer. On defense, Skyline got another outstanding game from pillars Steve Clark and Regan Andrews. Next time we play three man football, I choose those two. West, meanwliile, came from behind to beat the rowdy Highlanders. Highland came out of the blocks early with Steve Parkin stepping in front of a errant pass from West's Scott Dickerson to set up the score. It was Dickerson who was to make amends, however, as he teamed with Scot Stephenson on three successive nass plays down tiie stretch to set up Rick Defas winning run with less than a minute to go. His team had just won its third straight, and while it didn't look unbeatable, it had met his expectations. This is what weve been heading for," LEtoile said as he accepted congratulations from fans for a 28-- 0 victory over Tooele at Westminster field. "Weve gotten off trying to get psyched by the opponent and we are trying to set our own goals. While Region Five leader Murray was idle, Judge and Cyprus moved into second place with 1 marks. Cyprus was also a big winner, whipping previous second place Union got its first win, holder Uintah 47-5 over Carbon. The Bulldogs shook off nagging misto fumbles and interceptions takes stay right on Murrays tail. "We again played everybody we suited, LEtoile said, including a number of sophomores. The Bulldog passing game didnt fare nearly as well as Mele completed three to his side and three to the other, Tooelean Fred Woodruff intercepting twice early in the second half. Judge drives were stymied five times by fumbles or interceptions, but LEtoile wasnt worned. It shows theres room for improvement. LEtoiles defense, which allowed Tooele to penetrate no further than the line the Buffs got the ball on a fumble recovery but lost it two plays later to interception was stout. It was our first shutout, but actually weve shut out two others, LEtoile said, meaning scores in other games came agamst second or third string players. They tried every play: double reverses, triple reverses. And 95 percent of the time our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage. The Bulldogs scored the first time they got the ball, marching 59 yards with Ed Allam doing the honors from the three. Woodruffs two interceptions and Mike Pauiichs fumble recovery gave Judge a case of the slows, LEtoile admitted, but the hometowners scored again before the half on a quarterback sneak. Dave Faddis got the third Buffaloe interception in the third period, but Mele had already scored again. Colosimo got the final TD, and Reed Quinn kicked his fourth conversion. Cyprus got its third shutout while its offense racked up 516 yards in whipping Uintah. Mike Zupo passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third. He threw for 203 yards on accuracy. Danny Gilbert ran for 122 yards and touchdowns of 16 and 45 yards, and Bart Buetler picked off a fumbled lack in midair, returning it 20 yards for another TD. Bobby Honeycut and Scott Applegate caught touchdown passes of 38 and 35 yards.
