There were some areas where hunting was good. It was just a matter of being in the right spot," he pointed f...................,.. ; : ,, " ' In contrast to 1976, shooting did not get started much before the noon gun on Saturday. Last year, with the rain and all. shooting started in some places 35 to 40 minutes early. Some shooting started 10 minutes early Saturday, but it was close to noon before the barrage. Many hunters did find it was hard to get resting ducks up and flying. Regenthal explained this in saying: "When the weather is good and there's no one in the middle pushing them up, they'll stick to the open water. And, for the most part. that's the way it was on the opener." He added that the brief rains on Friday before the hunt did push some of the ducks south. Goose hunting will start this Saturday. According to early reports, this is supposed to be a good year for geese. Many were spotted around the Layton area Saturday and Sunday. Some hunters reported finding ducks suspected of having botulism as they walked to their blinds. Regenthal said this is always the case and that while some ducks were lost to the disease, there were no major outbreaks reported. The season for duck will run until Jan. 1 of 1978. Shooting hours vary, so hunters should make sure to check the proclamation for times. The limit is seven ducks per day with a possession limit of 14. - 1,.' ':y.. out. Hunters on private land in the region had good to excellent success. Officials also reported a higher: percentage of mature bulls taken this year, but said the majority of the harvest consisted of spike bulls. Deseret News sports writer With the 1977 open bull elk hunt just reaching the mid-wapoint, checks around the state indicate success has been as good, or maybe slightly better, than average. "The harvest of elk has been pretty good in most areas eround the state," says Division of Wildlife Resources big game biologist Rodney John. "Some areas have been better than others. of course, but overall it has been a good hunt so far. "Hunter success will be lower than past years simply because of the large increase in hunters (10,000 more than last year), but I wouldn't be surprised to see a record number of animals taken this year. Generally we have around 2,300 elk taken annually. This year it could go up to 2.400 or even 2,500." DWR officers in the central region report Mt. Nebo and most of the M anti Mountain area have been fair to good hunting. Reports from all areas are incomplete, but 21 bulls were reported taken from Nebo and 22 bulls from the Manti area the first weekend. The area around Fairview Canyon on the Manti was especially productive, while the Canyon area was on the slow side. Several bulls were also reported taken from the fairly new herd in the .. ? And not the best of surprises at that. Summed up, the weekend was slower than expected, there were fewer ducks than hoped for and lots more hunters primarily on the public shooting grounds. The hunt certainly wasn't the best. But, it was good enough to yield a good many limits. Around the Layton marshes, there weren't as many ducks flying by noon Saturday. But, there were at least three times as many hunters. A duck was a good pilot indeed if he were able to pilot his way through the garden of barrels sprouting from the willows. Best hunting was, of course, on the privaie shooting grounds. Food and resting ponds are always the best where hunters are limited and waterfowl feed is planted. Reports from most of the clubs checked like Rudy, Blackhawk and Harrison indicate that most of the ducks taken this year were big duckS mallard, gadwall and pintails. According to Al Regenthal, Division of Wildlife Resources waterfowl supervisor, the. managed marshes were in good shape.
