Our lawmakers in Washington will now get down tothe business of further control over our lives However, EPA estimates, like so many other government figures fed to the public, don't Ixither me all that much With the grain of salt" we take them ami go on our way. What does bothe- - me is the lHr figure EPA Uses for idling "such as would be expected in the city at traffic lights Traffic lights' Why m the name of thunder can't some of them lie set to move traffic and not impede its flow is beyond me I'm no traffic engineer, just a driver, and its difficult in the city or the county to find any street that really moves traffic w ithout a lot of 18 idling time. Want to save energy, Uncle Sam' I)o something about traffic lights, and knock off all that EPA New automobiles are being shown by dealers all oxer the eountry and m just about every case the TV advertisements list the EPA estimates of fuel consumption Did you ever look into how those EPA tests are conducted? The citv test" simulates a 7 5 nule trip with speeds ranging from 0 to 5 mph with average speed of 20 mph The trip takes 23 minutes and makes IS stops. 1S7 of the tim? (the trip) is spent idling. The "highway test" simulates a 10 mile, trip that lasts 13 minutes, speed range from 0 to 00 mph with an average speed of about 50 mph Purchasers of new cars and light trucks are then given an overall average which they might stop-and-g- o non-sto- i estimate That 7 5 miles and 10 miles hardly seem adequate distances on which to judge fuel consumption I think a lietter test would lie actual miles per gallon for the first 2,300 miles on the first 10,000 v ehules sold around the count rv My house cost PlTii in $ I fair market 3,000 $'. To the editor To sa I was appalled at reading your editorial in the Saturday. Oct. 1, edition would be a gross understatement Maybe you could not only encourage taking down the Stars Ave. street signs, but possibly also you could respectfully suggest carpeting the street so we could sweep under it such memorabilia as the neon sign which once graced the Salt Palace exterior, any uniforms that still may be around, albeit a little bumpy under the carpet; any red, white and blue ABA basketballs which may be corrupting our youth and last but not Were American Airlines. Doing what u e do best. least, the ABA championship trophy and championship rings being worn proudly by this writer, among others. On behalf o' the staff and playing personnel who thought we had made a contribution to this state, may we apologize for the apparent embarrassment caused by our bringing first-clasexciting sports entertainment to Utah. As a final suggestion, I hope the Deseret News can find some ink eradieator to make permanent deletions of coverage given the Stars during their five plus year stay in Utah. Harvey Kirkpatrick 6288 Loreen Dr. He protests mural delay To the editor As a citizen of Utah I question why Salt Lake Citys "City Walls Project One has not even begun after the date of its announced and stipulated completion. As an artist who submitted a proposal, 1 am perturbed by this procrastination, since feasibility ranked so high on the announced criteria for selection of a proposal. My proposed mural would have been on the wall by now. Tell me, the community, and the state why the one or even selected hasnt appeared been attempted! Cpon inquiry into this situation a month ago, I was told by Ed McKay, Salt Lake Council for the Arts, that the rental cost of scaffolding was too high to permit the artists who were selected to do the mural. So I mentioned that my budget includes these costs, plus all other costs involved in the production of my proposed mural. I sincerely believe Salt Lake City needs a mural which exemplifies graphically its character and enhances the many themes alre, dy here which make up that character. .lames Proctor Duncan III 343 N.
