Show 8C DCSFBfT NEWS, MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 1977 Danger of not applauding ss o ivr i Be glad you're on a budget and give it a dazzling autumn boost with savings in your ZCMI Auditorium or Budget Store Sportswear By Harold Lundstrom Deseret News music editor Before this column is phased out in the next fortnight, perhaps a few more words need to be said about applause, a subject that was given consideration here a week or so ago. (Downtown and University Mall Budget Store only) Perhaps it's not enough to know when to applaud but one should also consider how to applaud, which is VdUL.J Ji far more difficult. It all starts, oddly enough, well before the symphony concert begins. And how it comes about is this: You'll find that at every concert, without exception, there is always one musician who turns up late far later than everyone else. For some reason it always seems to be a violinist (perhaps his hair takes a lot longer to comb than the others; he always seems to have more per head.) Anyway, when he comes slinking on to the platform, trying to look casual, its sort of tradition that the audience let him know that he hasnt gotten away with it not by a long shot. The members of the Utah Symphony, for example, have long since tuned up. In fact, the Utah Symphony does such a an enthusiastic job out of this tuning up that oniy last winter they were voted by the ushers of the beautiful Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena as the loudest tuning up orchestra ever to warm up in the Ambassador. r Everyone who is paying any attention to the late violinist, who, by the way, sits in front of his fellow violinists, exchanges sly grins, and then starts up what might be called ' Ironical Applause. This is much the same as ordinary applause so far as the dapping is concerned ; the difference being that you should have a faint smile playing at the comers of your mouth. If the subtlety of the thing hasnt got over to you, try and recall the noise made when a crack quarterback is given a penalty for the visiting r tuesday 10 a.m. door - crashers List $20 famous Lady" side. on our summer separates breaking strings, accidents with the piano bench, and so on. mm in sizes m in sizes 8-2- 0 Jr JL and chambrays Reg. 8.99 basic knits; skivvies, mock turtles, real turtles List 22.50 current fashionable sweaters of all kinds, Reg. to 5.99 knit tops, long and short sleeve fall versions still more sweat- jP Jr J? dh pf o tfjv Jr JL JL A A - JL your pants wardrobe Reg. to 13.99 poly pull ons; moss, black, brown, navy, wine, ginger petite, average or tail in pull-on- s 10-2- 0 Reg. 14.99 woven polyester in , brown, navy; 10-1If perf. 19.99 denim jeans in most missy and junior sizes basic-black- calories, a large egg will provide lots of protein and an impressive assortment of vitamins and minerals. Whistling with two fingers in your mouth and shouting, Good old Sviatoslav, wont do you the least bit of good or Sviatoslav either. The importance of not dapping between ments has already been stressed in an earlier column, but it isnt always so easy as it sounds. It takes pretty strong will at times. After a while you will have noticed that a lot of the string section cant wait for the end of the movement so that they can start tuning their instruments furiously, they seem to enjoy this better than playing. Then the time is bound to come when you are caught at it. A movement ends, or so you think. All the violinists sit staring like statues, not tuning up or anything. Just as you start smiting your silly hands together, the string players turn and grin at one another: Got him that time." If you follow your program properly, of course, this wont happen to you. Neither are you likely to that of NOT commit an even worse offense dapping when you ought to. (That privilege is one of the two inviolates left for music critics they ought to be left something, you know.)
