Afterwards, more than 200 trophies were awarded to winners and runners-up- . As you'd expect in a tournament like this, the day was not without some final upsets. One of the first came in the boys 14 singles. Top seeded Brian Monson fell in two sets to Brad Pearce, The key to Pearce's win here was steady tennis. Monson, at times, delivered some great shots, but all too often his shots went astray. In the second set, Monson settled down and after losing his service early in the set, he broke back to tie at Pearce controlled the net, though, and broke Monson in the 9th, then held to service to win. Mindy Watts showed why she was seeded number one in the girls' 18 singles. All said, the two men had fun and Harmon Killebrew and Ralph Harding, former U.S. Congressman from Idaho, drew a sigh of relief. The first annual Danny Thompson affair was a huge success. Jerry Ford and Tip O'Neill promised to be a part of the regular cast. "I'll bring 40 Bostonians to this tournament next year," spoke Mr. Speaker. It was an good show, especially for several hundred members of the Utah Plumbers Association who had their annual convention at the same place and time. Plumbers and their families formed much of the gallery that sauntered around the two courses to look upon Jerry lord's golf swing. It's getting better. Speaker O'Neill is full of stories.
