Show ISA D6SERET NEWS. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1976 tf, 'Huebener' moving, powerful new drama ' By Howard Pearson Deseret News tlieater editor honest, sincere and who has integrity. He believes in Je principles of the church, as he clearly shows all during his scenes with his branch president and family. He shows this again in a powerful scene near the end when he is writing a farewell letter to his family and regrets having to break the Word of Wisdom by taking a drink of alcohol to deaden his senses before he is beheaded. He goes to his death believing that his branch president (also a German) had betrayed him to the Gestapo. But in his farewell letter, he forgives him. (It is disclosed that the branch president was not the one who betrayed him.) Card gives full meaning to the n words, which leap from the stage like a sword at times. Huebcner, which opened Thursday night at Brigham Young University, Is one of the most significant new dramas by a Utah author to come along in some time The play, wririen by Dr. Thomas F. ; - Rogers of the BYU faculty, concerns the execution by the Nazis in 1942 of a k young German who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-- 5 day Saints. In the play, based on an actual event, he tells his friends and I colleagues and his family, You cant I live with a lie; you cant sing a song that is written off key. By his action of challenging the Nazis, Huebcner was challenging his churchs doctrine of obeying the law of the land His branch president points this fact out to him when the latter discovers what Huebener is doing. When the youth and three of his companions are captured by the Ges- tapo, the branch president takes the excommunionly course open to him cation of the young man. This takes g place at a dramatic, church meeting, with Gestapo officers attending Daring the play, the branch president i explains to Heubener that he has opposed the youths SCtiGUS because they could endanger the church, and where the church is concerned, I will , decide, not you. " The youths are taken away and tried. - Although a minor in years, Huebener is i tned as an aduit because he is in advance of his age in his mind. Most of the other cast members particularly Scott Wilkinson, who plays the branch president; Joe Stoddard, Corey Sprague and R. Michael Bird, who plays the conspirators; Tom Nib-le- y as a Gestapo officer and Steve Powers, who plays Werner Kran?, come through ioud and clear. Their performances, especially in the department of diction, are well-nigimpeccable. Others in the cast include Paul Nibley, Maggie Bair, Robert Gowin, Mike Evenden, Miriam Bean, J. H. Stoddard, Terry Fowler, J. J. Patterson, Steve Anderson, William Darley, Samuel Dibello, Randy King, and J David Stprago. For the most part, they perform well, but there are times when the diction is a little less than perfect, possibly because they are striving too hard for the German accent. Dr. Ivan Crosiand, the director, deserves considerable applause for placing the emphasis where it is warranted, for underplaying in a scene or two, for having his cast understand tion. the importance of the various arguHuebener fs convicted and, after an ments and for holding the theatrics to are needed appeal and a wait in prison, is be-- the cena wtre they i headed.
