Show Bird hunters should never miss tf tw?5sp&. s' By Jim Fitzgerald 5? , 4? Saut& ? It all began like this A bunch of the boys wer? whooping it up at Preston Mann's hunting preserve. Considering the surroundings, it is not unusual that the conversation should turn to shooting. There was considerable surprise registered when I revealed I bad never shot a shotgun, not e,ren once. In fact, the only time Id triggered any sort of a firearm was during World War II, 25 years ago, when even little old ladies were prepared to fight. The joker in the neighborhood de cided it would be fan to have me shoot some trap. He was even willing to wager that I might hit a target once or twice, by accident, and he had no trouble finding someone to bet I wouldnt hit a thing. I agreed to the experiment. Besides, I was not required to risk any money myself. I was strictly a paid warrior, a novice doing battle lor the edification of veterans who had been there and back. I felt like a pfe pitching pennies against the Pentagon. I dont know how trapshooting got its name and Im not going to look in a dictionary to find cut, because my am is too sore to be lifting the dictionary. The thing is, you stand in a spot and point 'your gun in the air and holler at die attendant who is still puli laughing because he had to load your gun for you and tell you how to take the safety off. fiC&6 Immediately, a hunk of clay jumps out of a little house and blurs across the horizon, swish. "You should have shot that, someone said. "I didn't even see it, I explained. But I got better and, after awhile, even nicked some of the clay which is called a pigeon, the same thing you might cad a guy who'd bet on my shooting. The biggest laugh of the day came when I shot late at a pigeon after it had disappeared behind cne of those stupid little bouses where the pigeons live. Fortunately, I shot my curve and the clay flew, bam! "How could you have hit that pigeon? someone asked. You must have shot right through the house. I explained. But I ended up hitting 10 out of 25 pigeons, more than enough to win my promoters bet. It was an education; I learned that shotgun shels burst into a wide, wide pattern and its no wonder there are no pheasants left. The proposition is to give voters the opportunity to have a voice in deciding what goes into our public drinking water. A yes vote would give us the right to deicde in the future, by ballot, whether or not we want fluoride, or anything else, m our water. If we vote no and the proposition is defeated, we wiii have given up our right to choose, thus permitting the government to put anything they want to in the water. Mrs. Keith J. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1976 4 Clean air's impact The Board of Governors of the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce has opposed the Clean Air Act amemnd-ment- s since they were first introduced in the Congress. We have supported anj piece of legislation that would allow for a period of time to be allocated for the study of how these Clean Air Act amendments would affect the economy. This stand should not be confused with the onnosition to having clean air in Utah. We want Utah to continue its high clean air standards. We know this issue, Clean Air Act amendments and nondegradation, is not dead. But, the next time, we hope there will be some time spent by our congressional leaders on studying this issue and its ramifications on the people, the economy and the environment. To the editor: The Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Senator Mess and Senator Garn for not allowing the Clean Air Act Amendments, specially the nondegradation section, to become law. Their working together on this piece of legislation was not only important to Utahns, but the whole U.S. The Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commeice fell the Clean Air Act amendments and especially the Issue, were not fully explained to the American people and what effects they would have on our economy. The congressional committees studying this piece of legislation did not even take the time to have expert witnesses testify on the ramifications and the possible means of enforcement. To be short, this piece of legislation was rougn, and by no means polished to the point of final presentation to the people of this country uick vveus President, Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Howe can blame self Dental fluorosis To the editor: The statement released in June by the Utah State Board of Health in support of the proposed fluoridation regulations stated that fluoride prevents dental disease by strengthening tooth enamel. This is simply not supported by scientific evidence; indeed, fluoride does exactly the opposite. To the editor : Allan Howe has got to be kidding. I recently witnessed a national television show where his wife and attorney told his alleged story to the whole U.S. The Utah State Board of Health is distributing a booklet published by the American Dental Association (1974, 23 pp) which states that except for dental occur from fluorosis, no harmful results . . drinking fluoridated water at the levels recommended for dental protection. The booklet even cites one scientific paper which reported dental fluorosis in a population drinking water with 0.9 ppm of fluoride or less. Just what is this harmful effect of dental fluorosis which the public health authorities admit will occur among children drinking fluoridated water at the recommended levels? The medical dictionary states that chronic endemic dental fluorosis is found in communities using a drinking water that contains one part or more of fluorine per million. The permanent teeth of children so raised tend to erupt more or less chalky white in color and later tend to become pitted . . A reference cited by the American Dental Association booklet (Underwood, E.J.: Trace Elements in Human and Animal Nutrition. Academic Press, 1971, p. 396) defines chronic endemic dental fluorosis as being characterized by chalky-whit- e patches distributed irregularly over the surface of the tooth. The enamel is structurally weak, and in severe cases there is a loss of enamel accompanied by pitting. Therefore, fluoride actually damages and weakens the enamel at the level recommended, and the contention by the Utah State Board of Health that fluoridation prevents disease by strengthening tooth enamel is an egregious error. Lowell D. White. Ph D Riverton If this is his story, as told by his wife and attorney, it is no wonder he was convicted. Howe claims he has been persecuted by the news medii. In fact, Howe has persecuted himself through these ridiculous stories and claims of being hoodwinked into the situation. 1 have tried to keep an open mind, but this takes the cake. How any man could expect to not have wide coverage when he himself has put himself in the limelight ever since his arrest, is beyond my comprehension. If a manure pile is poked at enough it is bound to stir a stink. It is high time for Howe to put away his pitchfork and leave the manure pile alone and get down to the business at hand. He cant clear up the pollution by stirring up the stink piles Let it rest. If the Democratic party and Howe himself lose in this election, it will be because of all the publicity Howe has heaped upon himself. Hedda Neff Bountiful Laments animal suffering To the editor: Evelyn Mazuran, your Living Section editor, has it ail wrong. In Saturdays (Oct. 2) Living Section, she stresses the importance of a womans feeling free and unencumbered in whatever she is wearing." Accompanying the article is a photograph of a model wearrng a fox jacket. Fox and other wild animals are trapped by the millions through a contraption called the steel jaw trap. This barbaric device puts some 12,0u0,000 creatures each year through needless torture, pain, and suffering only to satisfy the egos of thousands who don furs and fatten the wallets of thousands of others who profit from the sale of these furs. How I wish the cries of anguish of the trapped animal would haunt the participants of this abominable cruelty. If only the people responsible for this immeasurable suffering could experience the same unimaginable fear, pain, thirst, hunger, freezing cold, and exhaustion the trapped animal feels for such prolonged periods of time, they would perhaps be jolted into realizing that fashion really does not justify this cruelty. A woman is truly beautiful when she refuses to see any living thing tortured and killed to be put on her back. Those who don these furs will never always he for there free and unencumbered, will come a day when those responsible for this senseless torture will have to kneel before the Lord and pay the full price tor having caused unnecessary pam and suffering upon His creatures.
