Ser. ice and actiN ities. programs and nageant s and traditional events have occurred. involving Church members on a personal level, in wards or stakes, and as key participants in state and community functions. Age was no limitation as 600 Primary children from the Meridian Idaho Stake in Mainstreet, U.S.A.,- - a two night Bicentennial pageant centered around a parade. Uncle Sam and Miss Liberty were character-narrators- . A group of youths and adults from Midvale 7th Ward, Midvale Utah Stake got involved in another way. They installed 20 flagpoles throughout their community while in the Ammon Idaho Stake, members of Special Interests (ommemorated the nation's 200th anniversary by purchasing and installing trees in Ammon's parks. Bicentennial activities reached to ,Japan where sixth grader Elle H. Harsteler on a Bicentennial writing contest at Misawa Air Base with the -essay, What My Flag Means to Me." He put the two $25 bonds he won into his mission fund. Much of the activity by Church units had an flavor, such as the country fair of the Monument Park 3rd Ward, Salt Lakt Foothill Stake, and the log cabin built as a ward project in Modesto, Calif. The country fair in Salt Lake City featured a contest, judging of baked goods, displays and booths and an assortment of games. In Modesto, the Oakdale 2nd Ward members built the cabin as part of a display on furnished dwellings from different periods of American history in cormectipn.with the regional. meekings. Ward members used the adz and the f roe, pioneer woodworking tooi.;. build the replica pioneer cabin. A float from the Santa Rosa Ca lifor nia Stake won first place in the Santa Itcsa Rose Parade and, also in Califor Ma, the Fresno and Merced stakes combined for three events a stage presentation called "What a Country," helping a community raise funds for a new stadium and holding a county-widbarbecue. Many regions combined celebrating the Bicentennial with June regional meetings and the cultural program, such as the Potomac Region's presentation of "The Voice of Liberty" and the Pennsylvania Region's "Colonial Village" historic township. The colonial village was a replica of early Valley Forge and included a schoolhouse, country store, barn and early American homes staffed by costumed crafts people. Children could compare their modern schooling with the school of writing slates and willow switches. Fresno California East Stake and Menlo Park California Stake presented stage productions: "America, the Land of Promise," in Fresno and "You're a Good Man, Uncle Sam" in Menlo Park. A creative arts festival appropriately focused the attentions of members in the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Stake, and, in Illinois, the Chicago Region presented "Sousa's America," a musical event centered on the life of John Philip Sousa. Members of the Falls Church Ward, Oakton Virginia Stake, located in suburban Washington D.C., were involved in a variety of activities, including a ward picnic and clean-uproject. The Hanford (Calif.) Ward sponsored a heritage arts fair and invited the entire community ; the Knoxville Tennessee Stake Rehef Society sponsored e one-roo- p |
