Since 1965, when the Utah Golf Association adopted a format to test the endurance, skill and mental toughness of simon pures with a medal qualifying and ensuing match play, only one veteran has been able to 'Tack the youth squad. In 1972, at Patio Springs Country Club, Arlen Peacock celebrated his 40th birthday by winning the Beehive State's amateur plum. But mostly, it has been a combination of youth and college golf background since 1965. Jon Mauss was the 1965 champ, and though he was not a college golfer, he had a chance to be one and spurned it. Outside those two, the spoils have gone to Usiversity of Utah golfers Bruce Summerhavs (1966), Tom Christensen (1968), and 131;naie Branca (1974 and 1975) and BYU golfers Craig Ridd (1967), Jack Chapman (1969), Ray Leach (1970), Rusty Guernsey (1971) and James Blair (1973). Since then, it has had a demanding format and has been played on challenging layouts. One prestigious entry is Mike Malaska, the 1974 Food King Utah Open champion. Mike hasn't had an outstanding college season, golfing for Weber State. but he is capable of turning his game around in a hurry. Two toughies from last year's event are Mike Borich and Greg Sharp. Borich defeated Sharp on second hole of a widen death to become 1975 qualifying medalist. Borich then went to the quarterfinals where he was ousted by Clyde Barton, who also is entered in the 1970 e; ent. Sharp went to the semifinals where he was defeated by eventual champion Don Branca. Among Sharp's victims in 1975 was Malaska. Mack Christensen, who also is trying again, went to the final match against Branca. His semifinal victim was Barton. Three former champions are in the pack Blair, Peacock and Jack Ridd, who was titlist in 1963 and 1964. Blair is among the top favorites. He is the 1976 Western Athletic Conference champion, and while his game was not consistent at the NCAA championships, he played spectacular at times. Among the veterans, Mien Peacock has been the steadiest through the years. And Jack Nobie has given the youngsters a few fits, too. not ., . 7t... but not the Amateur.
