And two wiser men in their respective fields the wörld has seldom known. I remet. ',er the first the first time I met Ernest Untermann. We were running the Yampa River in 1937 on the Frazier-SwaiExpedition. We had with us the late Charles Kelly, archeologist and historian, and Dr. A. S. I...oaddus, whom you nldsters will recall for his unique travel series on early radio. We wt. e running rivers, basically, but with the idea we would look into ruins and caves of the Yampa and Creen Rivers to determine if basket-make- r Indians had lived that far north. These were Indians who were settled in their ways, who irrigated lands, made fine implements and accessories at weaving and pottery. Later, when Les Goates assigned this reporter to staff the outdoor beat we were with Steve often. He was our dictionary for all bird and animal matters. He penned some brilliant pieces for us. He headed committees for the Utah Wildlife Federation, was on many state and national boards. Contributions he has made to the state of Utah in Just his official matters can never be tabulated. Everyone thought highly of Steve. He said what le believed and in plain words. And he believed what said. No concessions for anyone. : In his last days, before cancer cornered him, he was an ardent bird watcher and duck hunter. He bunted ducks mostly because he had a place to sit to and a warming stove to sit by match the fowl fly 'When duck blinds got too cold. Out in the hay fields were several people who came into the stack area when we came up from the river. Billy Ruple, a pretty lady, had married Ernest Entermann 12 years before. Both were geologists and lad come back to spend their best days in the DinoSaur area where Billy had grown up. The story has been how they established the museum, how the Untermann family had painted the murals and staffed the museum for many years. I shall not forget that night at the Ruple Ranch. We huddled in lamp light to inspect the fabulous collection of Indian lore bones, beads, arrowheads, skinning stones, etc. This collection found its way into the museum where so many people have viewed it. For indeed, their descent could've been from that cloud they were riding for some 210 Beaver. And indeed, in miles back to earth that small southern Utah community there is an aura el majesty surrounding the prep football team. which had won its fourth title in the last six years. The community of Beaver could appreciate the the efforts of the young men of Coalville who fought gallantly North Summit Braves Thursday afternoon in Robert L. Rice Stadium , to e game, only to lose a the Beavers. "It was great to see these kids come bl..k after being down in the middle of the year and people got down on us." said Beaver coach Al Marshall, trying to light back the tears of victory. "We lost to Kanab and the next week we were flat against Parowan and lost in overtime. Our biggest kids (Mike Myers and Tony White) are only 175 pounds. That's what makes this win so satisfying. Two years ago with our biggest and most solid we went 13-team. "They knew they could do it. They were physical. But this team has had to scrap for everything it got." That understatement was witnessed by many fans at Robert L. Rice Stadium Thursday afternoon. The young Braves made the Beavers scrap for every inch of astro turf they got. Actually, the Braves grabbed a quick lead in the first quarter. Rene Potter blocked Mitch Oakden's punt and Larry McQueen recovered and raced 25 yards at 10:20 for the Braves' only score.
