That question is buzzing the minds of many sports fans this week as the Salt Lake squad prepares for its second home game. Z The Eagles have played every other team in a loss! the league with the same result ?! Jost what is the problem? ?! One trouble is the Salt Lake team simply mandoesnt shoot enough. Despite to beseechment the Bodnars Gus contrary, ager the Eagles have shown fatal hesitation and timidity when it comes to slapping the disc toward the 0-- 5 coach-gener- o al ribt. Even more surprising is the fact that those the most hesitant to shoot have been veterans with reputations as top goal scorers. Bodnar is disappointed in most of his veterans for that reason and because theyve shown little if any concern for helping along and mixing with the younger plajers on the squad. f Therefore, the Eagle coach may begin to lean more and more toward the youngsters. Its just common sense that the more the 7 younger Eagles play, the more theyll improve. Fearless Forecast?) Now, after a look at all the teams in the WttL, here is my short rundown on each with the predicted order of finish : Portland: The Buckeroos have 15 established hockey players returning from last season. They have top scorers like Art Jones, Norm Johnson, Andy Hebenton and Art Saunders ; adequate goalies in Dave Kelly and Jim McLeod and intimidating defensemen like Jerry Korab, Rick Foley add Connie Madigan. The Buckeroos should finish first in league play by at least 10 standings points. Seattle: The Totems struggled last season e finally making the Patrick Cup competition by; winning a playoff game with Phoenix. This year a working agreement with the New York Rangers has brought the Totems more speed (an example is center Bill Knibbs), better defense (witness Bob Ash) and stronger goal tending (watch George Surmay). Seattle looks a good bet to finish second. San Diego: The Gulls are very fast and have good scorers like Len Ronson, Alain Caron and Bob Courcy. Their goal tending will be no worry with Jack McCartan around, but at defense there are shortcomings. The Gulls have also shown the e tendency to be intimidated physically by opponents. The Gulls should repeat their third place finish. Sait Lake: Ill answer the initially posed question with a No. Salt Lake is not as bad as the present record shows. The younger players are showing signs of soon putting it altogether. Guys liEb Joe Robertson, Dennis Kassian, Murray Kuntz afld Jack Rathwell are going to have some brilliant moments from the forward line. Golden Guyle Fielder is one veteran who will produce as expect- " be-f$- ed; Z Salt Lake should nab fourth place and the last pla'yoff spot ,in a tight race with Phoenix and Dpjiver. Phoenix: The Roadrunners acquired some excellent veteran forwards from Vancouver in Pat Hannigan and Ted McCaskill. They will complement other veterans like Milan Marcetta, Andre lUpse and Larry Lund. Maple Leaf goalie Marv Edwards giyes Phoenix one of the better netminders in the league and Don Caley or Rich Charron are adequate back-u- p men. The defense looks questionable except for veteran Sandy Hucul. Phoenix should finish fifth. Denver: Defense is a stfong point for the Spurs with guys like Larry Mavety, Jim Graham, Bob McCord and Dave Amadio around. The will be adequate, too, with Angeles King Wayne Rutelage joining Jacques Caron. y Offensively, however, Denver is sorely lacking. After Ed Hoekstra, Wilf Martin and Bryan Harper there isnt much proven talent. Denver should end up holding up the rest of the league from the sixth spot. to M.
