In 1867, The Parent Sunday School Union was organized with George Q. Cannon, who had been an apostle for seven years, as president. Five years later, the name was changed to the Deseret Sunday School Union with Elder Cannon named as general superintendent. Other superintendents who followed were Lorenzo Snow and Joseph F. Smith, who served as superintendents for a time, while serving as presidents of the Church; President David O. McKay, George D. Pvper, Milton Bennion and George R. YWMIA Observes Birthday The 99th anniversary of the founding of Young Women's Mutual Improvement Association was observed last w'eek by YWMIA officials and former leaders at a banquet in the Lion House. About 115 women participated in the event, which paid tribute to tire first ladies of MIA. Honored were Mrs. Florence S. Jacobsen, YWMIA president, and her counselors, Mrs. Margaret R. Jackson and Mrs. Dorothy P. Holt; former president, Mrs. Bertha Reeder Richards, who served from 1948 to MB, and her second counselor, Mrs. LaRuc C. Longden ; and Mrs. Lucy T. Andersen, who served as a counselor to Lucy Grant Cannon from 1944 to 1948. Among former general board members T. who served from 1902 to 1913. For at the banquet was Mrs. Elizabeth Sar-doni- a, the first three years on the board, she served under Elmina S. Taylor, first general president of the YWMIA. Although the YWMIA, orginally called the Retrenchment Association, was organized in 1869, it was not until 1880 that the first general president was called. Since WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 7, 1968 then, five women have served at the helm of the worldwide organization. Chairman of the birthday observance was Mrs. Eetty P. Jones. She was assisted by committee members, Mrs. Gladys D. White, Mrs. Afton G. Affleck, Mrs. Aurelia J. Nicodemus, Mrs. Mabel J. Gabbott and Mrs. Delilah H. Brown. Mrs. Jones paid tribute to Mrs. Jacobsen for the work she has done since becoming president in 1961. Among her accomplishments, Mrs. Jacobsen was instrumental in the restoration of the Lion House, home of Brigham Young where the YWMIA was organized. one-tim- e Sunday School remained essentially an organization for children until 1904, when a parents class was introduced in the Weber Stake Sunday Schools. Two years later, the parents class was adopted on a Churchwide basis the beginning of departments for adults. The Sunday School has always been enjoyed by Church members. Joseph Smith Horne, who was a memof Elder Ballantynes first Sunday School, expressed it this way in 1928 when he w as 85 years old. Never have I seen an organization grow as it did and we children enjoyed it. Going to Sunday School was the real treat of the week, especially as we could wear our Sunday clothes, although some had to go in their every day home made apparel. I believe Sabbath School is the beginning of bringing out the best in young people and the training will never leave them. And as the Sunday School notes its anniversary this week, the thought uppermost in the minds of the leaders is that the teachings received by Sunday School participants will always remain with them." ber |
