It is a story which well reflects the strong character of the founders of West is Utah and is well worth remembering. In 1903 dairy farmers in Utah's Cache Valley found themselves more producing milk than they could profitably sell. They were faced with the problem of having to give up dairying unless additional markets could be found for their milk. Evaporated milk was a new commodity. In some parts of the country it was being produced and distnbuted at a profit botji to the manufacturers and the farmers supplying the raw or fluid milk. A movement was therefore started looking to the establishment of an evaporated milk plant in Richmond. The committee which was sent east to investigate such plants returned with a favorable report and recommended that an effort be made to start MIW LOW PBMS ON PELLETED MORGRO water salable com .lately pelleted fertiliser 100 Manufactured especially far sydano-typ- a PELLETED Only applicatar .c par 1,000 sq. ft. The name Sego Milk was taken from Utah's state flower, the beautiful Sego lily. And as the' Sego lily meant so much in the early history of Utah pioneers, many of whom found its edible root a life saver in, the first, hard, hungry years, so has ver-tiabl- e passed since that first plant in Richmond began operation under the name of Utah Milk . Co., Sego Milk meant much in the dairy history of Cache Valley. It has opened wider markets' for milk and cream. It has stimulated the improvement of dairy herds. It gave substantial and practical aid in increasing the output . and the income of dairy farms in this area. Segow has done all this by providing excellent quality and service to the Cache Valiev consum- - ers. The largest bank In Cache Valley agreed to take shares. Soon, however, discouragement arose. Rumors circulated that companies trying like ventures in other localities had failed, that the market for evaporated milk was glutted, and that the Richmond product could not be sold even if the factory should be built and operated. Because of this and other rumors the bank had decided to withdraw its subscription. Others immediately followed the bank's lead. Probably f of those who had agreed to subscribe forstock withdrew. It was indeed a dark hour for this hoped-fo- r enterprise. The committees were discouraged and ready to quit. Mass Meeting was It than decided to hold a mass meeting to consider giving up the entire project. There were a few in the group, however, who had met obstacles before in oilier ventures and overcome tlmm and Marriner V. Merrill was one of the foremost of these. The meeting was held More than a hundred men who had been interested in the undertaking and had subscribed to the limit of their financial ability attended the meeting. The committees reported their labors, the difficulties they had met, the obstacles they had overcome, but that now conditions were so adverse they felt It was useless to attempt to go on with their efforts.
