Show Wednesday May 29 1974 Pago 2 EDITORIAL PAGE Tell Execs your view We hate to sound like a broken record but it is time Moo! again to talk about student government Today at 5 pm in the Executive Council chambers in the UC the ASUSU student officers will vote on their budget requests for next year Twenty-fiv- e requests will be voted upon totaling $159150 The requests are all for organizations that were funded last year Some of these such as $2700 for the Rodeo Club and $2500 for the Harmonious Living Center are but some of the requests might merit re a consideration For example why is $9000 going into a general fund and another $4900 going to the Executive Council? To our knowledge there are many groups on campus such as the outdoor program and PIRG which are worthy of student money Because we think that there are a few questions concerning how student activity fees are spent we would like to ask you students to voice your opinion It would take little time and-o- r effort for each one of to to the officers executive you go up today and tell them how you feel about how your money is being spent (a list of the appropriations are on today's Student Life page one) Tell them how you feel whether you think that their priorities are right or wrong If you think the money is going to worthy causes fine Tell them that But if you think that possibly there are some organizations on campus that do deserve money that do not appear on the appropriations list tell them well-deserve- Editor Student Life To Mr Travis Crookston (moo): The herds that move about on the USU campus shouldn’t stray off from the stampede they should like you say stick to the sidewalks Why just the other day I was gregariously herding towards the UC zigging and zagging flowing with the crowd right angle turn three left anlge turn hup-twfour and when I reached quadrant X-- 4 Y6 I noticed a little doggee wandering off across the lawn (a stray) An odd sight indeed It had five toes and d 144J4e-mo- o was whistling! good a male is considered a minor until he reaches the age of 21 A female is a minor until the age of 18 Both attain the status of adulthood when they marry The age difference in the law causes discrimination on the basis Editor Student Life: Editor Student Life: In reply to Rod Galloway’s fee lings toward local businessmen: It seems human nature to blame everyone for what one or two people do and it never applies to everyone I state one example: I’m from out of town and come here only to go to college Upon discovering I had a tire going flat I pulled into the conoco station at Main and 4 N I asked if he would take an check to fix a tire He said it was against his policy and asked if I had a friend in town who could vouch for me I replied the only peole I knew were the professors of my classes To this he replied “Oh if you have a student card I’ll take your check I like to help the students if I can” If you have a gripe about an individual direct it at him don’t try to fit everyone into the same mold They don’t fit After reading the May 17 issue the article concerning the 152 new bike racks to be installed we feel that we should look at this in order of precedence How long has the parking lot in front of the UC been a wind biown gouged mess? Granted the bike racks are needed but the parking lot needs to be repaired because during the course of the school year it seems to be put to much more use than bike racks Clifton W Jenkins 529-34-14- 77 Radical or not? In Utah Editor of Student Life: An editor What does that kind of person bring to mind? A of sex It is more difficult for a male under 21 to gain residency in Utatffhan it is for a female This can be a definite problem if the male is trying to gain residency tuition At USU tuition is $28750 per quarter and instate-tuitiois $11 750 per quarter A male under 21 who has parents that live in another state and claim him as a tax dependant cannot gain residency A minor male finds it difficutl to gain residency even if he is totally on his own Recently a few under-2males have been able to gain residency by claiming emancipation from their parents This means that they receive no financial aid from their parents An female does not have this legal obstacle to obtaining residency although she may find it difficult if she is still heavily tied to her parents The to legal attain adulthood age should be the same for both sexes The law now discriminates males against 18 19 and te - n - -- radical fanatic that can only tear things down and never compliments anyone or thing? I hope you don’t generalize that way Richard Brady can fit into that category but he also fits into another So far in my opinion he has done a job that deserves only praise He has changed editorial policies yes but he has also done much more than ruffle a few feathers Layout quality originality objectivity and 1 jounalistic style have improved and will hopefully continue to improve with time As a writer on the staff I have for the first time felt that the editor really cared if he put out a quality paper or a pile of trash He’s getting student input (I consider myself a student) into the paper by asking for our opinions So far he has hired 18-year-- ld nearly everyone that walks through the door with ability to include a wider diversity of the studentbody Tnose of you that don’t like Rick or any of us radical journalists for that matter don’t M 4 ' ' 88 Get parking lot first Different molds Male discrimination in Utah residency laws 20-year-o- Sincerely yours Linda Ann Perry 529-90-84- out-of-to- out-of-sta- opinions no license is given us to condemn or impeach editors We must be more objective and bjf2kninded and look at the tfefgs that have been done for the 553-04-93- 24 We feel that if students would take just a small amount of their time to let their feelings be known then USU would be better for it in-sta- te agree with certain editorial Brooks Montgomery that too so he will be eligible to pay seem to realize that we’re not professionals We are learning just like everyone else and we don’t profess to have all the right answers I’m wondering how many students could write an eight page (average) tArm paper three times a wee that shows everything they’ve learned in their field of study I’m sure that it would be no better than STUDENT LIFE for this is our term paper Even though you or I may not Bill Player 528-74-18- 73 S?ra Ilaynie Jcnl Jensen Cindy Lindstrom 528-88-43- 70 528-89-42- 25 528-90-55- 74 Thanks! Editor Student Life Many times little acts of kind deeds go unnoticed and therefore we would like to commend the class who cleaned up the litter around the UC Tuesday morning Their signs stating "‘Pitch in don’t litter” should be taken a little more seriously to keep our campus and surroundings a place we can be proud of Shauna Potter 529-84-04- 84 Janene Mitchell 528-84-44- 17 Karen Lebsack 528-86-11- 15 STUDENT LIFE STAFF Editor Business Manager Managing Editor News Editor Copy Editors Staff Writers Richard Brady Steve Leggett Carol Harmer Pauline Summers Kristy Larsen Jodeane Albright Alyson Lowder Becky Gillette Linda Backstrom Lois Walters Lynn Lanier Linda Perry Staff Reporters Susan Coltharp Tim Gurrister Sherelynn Gray Jill Miller Helen Dovey International Writer Sports Editor Sports Writer Photo Editor Photographers Illustrator rainment Edafe Oddo Randy Hendricks Doug McCulloch Ken Passerella Tony Collie Richard Albright Brian Shifter Vicky Weiser Susan Arrington Rick Mills Business Office Jim Quigley Steve Snow Debbie Drage i 0 1 |
