Below Is the nucleus of Dr. lecture.) Jus-tese- nt inner-harmon- Drive-- Hypothetical-Deductiv- e R e The ns Long has the question what is pleasure? occupied the scrutiny of the philosopher. And long has the question evaded definite answering. Nearly all of our present, most varied conceptions of pleasure are derived, as a matter of fact, from the ancient Greeks. Aristippus, for example, saw pleasure as the insistent seeking of sensual satisfactions. The Epicureans, apparently having suffered from an occasional hangover, took a more temparate view pleasure involves the seeking of satisfactions in whose indulgence today are not sown the seeds of tomorrows pains. The Stoics rejected sensual satisfactions altogether, true pleasure inheres in a quiet, contemplay of mind. tive, While each of these views has enjoyed the acceptance of various individuals and cultures, none has ever reached undisputed concensus modern philosophers are content, moreover, that the real problem in attempting to reach agreement is less one of identifying the essence of pleasure than a haggling over definitions. Be that as it may, the 20th century psychologist has entered the esthetic area, armed with the tool of behaviorism, has sought to shed some experimental on the mechanism underlying light ' pleasure." U. P. Sherrington early preferred the notion that there is no such thing as pleasure per se Rather, all positive affectivity (that which draws an organism toward an object) is based upon the reduction of pain. What we call "pleasure, then, is merely the cessation of noxious stimulation. Sherrington Hull Theory Sherringtons unitary hedonism was a most influential notion. It became in time the cornerstone of the most ambitious of all modem theories of behavior Clark Hulls self-indulge- Salt Lake City, Utah -- duction system. I Sherrington-Hu- unitary ll CHAPUNs he- POOP SHEET donism met little opposition until the late forties. About this time, a psychologist by the name of P. T. Young postulated a dualistic hedonism: pleasure and pain are separate experimental categories subserved by separate neurological mechanism. Youngs dualistic hedonism was not too well received until, in the middle fifties, a most startling discovery was made in Canada. James Olds and Peter Milner had thrust electrodes deep Into the subcortical brains of rats; it was found that the animals would work rap-- j idly and unceasingly to press a small lever which permitted electrical current to flow into their brains. Surely, Olds reasoned, we have discovered pleasure cen ters in the brain; it would seem obvious that P. T. Westminsters entire fresh, man class participated, but due to incompleteness, facetious answers, etc., the study was narrowed to 140 questions. Classified as to denomination preferences and background. H drive-reducti- on ves Scrutiny of Findings While many psychologists were won over to Youngs brand of hedonism, others were suspect that Olds interpretation of the selfstimulation phenomenon was a that it constituted neither nor disproof of any hedonproof istic theory. The dissidents pointed out that the behaviors of the self - stimulating animal seemed markedly deviant from those of normally reinforced (rewarded) animals. Soon, many psychologists began a careful scrutiny of the selfstimulation findings (which by this time had been extended to- cats, monkeys, and even human beings) I was one of the scrutinizers. By Jim Morris One of the last major events of this school year will take place this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (26th, 27th and 28). This is next years calendar and budget planning retreat open to the new and old SGAC officers, new and old class presidents, and officers or representatives of all the clubs and organizations on campus. In other words, everyone is welcome to come! As mentioned, of the retreat is the main purpose to plan the complete calendar for next years events (this includes scheduling of all club meetings, school dances, Homecoming, Mardi Gras, movies, Picnics, etc.) and to draw up the entire budget for SGAC for the coming year. You can see why it is important to have all the clubs and other factions oh campus be well represented at these meetings as possible. Obviously, there is a lot of work for everyone who attends this retreat, but there will also be a chance for a lot. of fun.
