I 5 the average prices for electricity and for natural gas rose by 655 cents per kilowatt hour and $309 per 100 therms respectively Food prices behaved similarly in March Green onions down 233 cents a pound for the month led the price decline while sweet peppers up 142 cents a pound recorded d the biggest advance The price of porterhouse steak fell by 61 cents while that of round steak rose by 64 cents Figure that out Rising prices result in inflation and falling prices in deflation either of which can cause trouble if the trend is too sharp or prolonged What is happening now is something in between — disinflation or a declining rate of inflation It too can create problems as Welcome help for the blind sounds — one a peep peep the other a caw caw They are pedestrian traffic signals for the blind trapped somewhere around The bird call signals were 24th and Washington through the cooperaWe checked Sure enough installed of Ogden City the there was a rhythmical cuck- tive efforts Ogden Blind Association and oo bird sound filling the air Ogden Lions Club The Not only that we dis- the in the blind communicovered it has a very worth- leaders ty have the responsibility for while function in use of These odd sounds vaguely training the sightless the signals resembling bird calls that are causing the double takes for Next time you wait for a pedestrians are a new service light change at that intersecprovided for the visually tion briefly close your eyes a bird call will alert you when handicapped There are actually two it’s time to move on Paul Harvey Ventilating emotions US News on the subject of “an- ger” What was a technical psycholog- ical study like that doing in a hard-- ! nosed ed publication? ' You had to read the concluding paragraphs to understand why business-and-politics-orien- t- The Latin American nations which are overthrown with the least frequency are those where ithe populace ventilates its emotions at the bullfight or the soccer ’ game Granted Latins can get pretty - violent at a soccer game but if their violence can be exhausted in that arena it is less likely to fer-- ! ment and eventuate in revolution As ancient Romans furnished “bread and circuses” to distract the discontented modem rulers consciously or otherwise divert public attention from frustrations toward violent sports Dr Leo Madow who used to chair psychiatry at the Medical Anger against others motivates murder against one’s self it motivates suicide against a govern- ment it detonates bombs Dr Madow says United States of Americans with higher expectations would have a higher degree of frustration were it not for football boxing hockey wrestling He says they are “a tremendous outlet for hostility” He says the kind of “Three Stooges” humor where somebody is always getting bopped on the head or hit in the face with a pie is similarly “a wonderful outlet” He thinks Don Rickies has done more than any physician to relieve blood pressure But back to Latin American I am writing in response to Mr Well I certainly cannot and I’m quite certain they care when they do make a mistake be- cause each checker has a number and each cash register prints that number on every sales slip that goes through that register and sometimes the scales do weigh wrong but is that the checkers fault most machinery breaks down on occasion (do you blame the grocery checker when your car breaks down too!) Really sir why would a checker or a cashier want to steal or rip-of- f a customer as you put it for a few pennies or maybe a dollar when they handle hundreds of dollars every day that isn’t theirs They are only working to make an honest living the same as you or I I wonder sir if you would please try to be honest with yourself and admit it isn’t the checker or cashiers that you feel so cheated by but maybe it could be the high prices of everything you go to buy and how fast a paycheck or retirement check can disappear paying these prices Well please remember that the checkers didn’t set the high prices they have to pay them the same as you or I So instead of feeling so§ cheated and ripped-of- f why don’t you try and be a more pleasant customer have you heard the saying “Love thy neighbor” that probably means checkers and or cashiers too Mrs Jack L Hadlock event' Layton This concerns a recent concert that came to the Salt Lake area I am referring to the rock group “Black Sabbath” This was a very grievous event for myself as well as others that share my concern for our youth Why do we allow such groups to influence our precious children and teenagers? People this group is more than just a “cute rock group” with gimmicks This group promotes Satanic worship! Did any of you parents that allowed your children or even worse took your children to this concert ever check out what they do at the concert or what they sing about? It broke my heart to think of the many children teenagers and adults that participated at this concert Do you realize the consequences? I truly believe that because of groups like this (and I could name many more) our youth of today become involved in the occult Hey mom and dad we are responsible for our children Why would we want them to be destroyed by garbage like this? I am convinced that becoming involved with any form of the occult leads to such crimes as murder and rape and can cause depression leading to suicide Please parents find out what your children and teenagers are getting involved with! My prayer is that we will not allow groups like “Black Sabbath” or any other groups that promote Satanic worship in our beautiful state Marsha Martinez ! Reply achieved objectives Ogden I am pleased that Commissioner Frank Maughan replied to my letter to the editor of April 28 1982 By his reply I achieved the objectives of writing my article as follows: November elections 2 An admission that Maughan also confirmed by a telephone call to me that he had no compulsion against accepting the inflated $7500 pay raise 3 An admission that he attended the meeting considering the salary increases and did not speak out against them 4 A statement that in addition to the inflated commissioner salary he also receives a healthy government retirement check each month I am of the opinion his justification is not going to win much sympathy and votes of the many Weber County and Ogden City unemployed the many seeking jobs and not finding them those depending on Social Security and food stamps the many losing their homes and business the many taking home reduced pay checks in order to keep working and the retirees and widows on fixed incomes facing stiff Weber County taxes increased stiff Ogden City taxes and high utility costs I told Maughan over the phone I would continue speaking out against any politicians when I felt that they were taking advantage of their positions for personal gain or increasing taxes without strong justification I included US senators and congressmen of both parties who voted themselves exemptions from paying income taxes I make this statement even though I am an official in one of the Weber County Republican precincts J Wayland Mattsson Rallies scheduled for ERA Ogden Mary Jean Uebelgunne was raised in the Mormon Church served a mission to England was married in the Ogden Temple and is the mother of two fine children She only became disillusioned with her religion when its leaders formally stated that America’s women were unworthy of “Equality of rights under the law” and therefore the same should be denied The ERA dead? Consider this quote: “Women are already represented by their husbands “Men know more about business than women “If women win this fight they would cease to be respected “They would neglect important things “It would turn women into men “It would destroy chivalry” Certainly all very valid reasons to oppose the ERA However they came from a pamphlet printed in 1917 by the National Woman Suffrage Publishing Company listing some of the reasons people were against giving women the right to vote Erma Bombeck says “Professional mourners of the ERA have been saying goodbye to equality for women since May 14 1708” She is sure of the date because “That is the year American houses got glass windows That is the year women decided cleaning them was less than a religious experience” Erma has a recurring dream Her husband says “Hey the president named a new Supreme Court judge today” And Erma answers “Oh? And whom did she name?” On Sunday June 6 tens of thousands of women and men will be rallying for the ERA in front of the following state capitols: Tallahassee Fla Raleigh NC Oklahoma City Okla and Springfield 111 Four states whose legislators could make the amendment a permanent part of American law of The only weapon left to the woman-hater- s this country is to succeed in convincing us of the futility of all This we will not allow I believe the 27th Amendment will become a reality It must! Dorris J Eastman Meeting with a group from this city’s Chamber of Commerce Brown cited the other day what he called a “gigantic increase” in the state’s imprisonment rate — 151 percent or “more people in prison than ever before” Why? Mandatory sentencing he said and laws providing for more determinate sentencing “career criminal” apprehension and prosecution and a Crime Resistance Task Force — all passed during his administration In fact if California’s legal system was “any more effective we’d have to start letting people out of prison” Instead Brown is backing a $495 million bond issue for new prisons that’s on the June 8 primary ballot The governor stopped just short of the unpro-vabl- e claim that bulging prisons are responsible for a decline of 03 percent in reported violent crime or for a remarkably small increase in overall crime 14 percent from 1980 to 1981 But the implication was unmistakable and Jerry Brown — the probable Democratic nominee for the US Senate seat warmed for six years by SI Hayakawa — obviously wouldn’t mind anyone taking it Brown A minute That was Tax-Cuhe was Brown detailing what he t later said was “almost $50 billion” in tax reduction in the last five years — including Proposition 13 which he originally opposed the elimination of inventory and some inheritance levies and the indexing of state income taxes He said revenue sacrificed to indexation alone would solve California’s current budget shortfall of $24 Law-and-Ord- er billion Last month the governor was Peaceful Brown declaring in a notable speech to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council his support of the verifiable nuclear “freeze” initiative Californians will almost certainly approve next November Brown an effective advoHe’s still cate of an economy in which he says “less becomes more through the efficiency of high Brown the hardtechnology” and Clean-Ai- r core environmentalist Brown who Then there’s Balanced-Budge- t favors like President Reagan a constitutional amendment to make the federal government match outgo to income (as California already must do) And the point is that all these Browns appeal to important elements in California and establish an eclectic political position that may prove hard to beat It’s true that in the March 1982 California Poll Brown trailed in trial pairings with each of the three likeliest Republican Senate candidates But other polls show the one with the largest lead Rep Pete McCloskey running only third for the GOP nomination And McCloskey local analysts mostly agree will split the moderate Republican vote with the second-plac- e contender Mayor Pete Wilson of San Diego That means Brown’s opponent probably will be the Republican front-runnRep Barry Goldwater Jr — who apparently is not being much hurt by the ineffective campaign of another conservative Rep Robert Dornan Democrats here can hardly conceal their appetite for running against Goldwater Jr Not only does Brown tend to shut off such favorite conservative issues as law and order tax reduction and balanced budgets but Gold-watis regarded as too conservative to exhis appeal sufficiently beyond the Repubpand lican right That base may make him a minority victor in a winner-take-aprimary but Republicans who win statewide office in California need the votes of a lot of Democrats too — as many as 35 percent of the total Assembly Speaker Willie Brown estimates In a year when unemployment and high interest rates trouble California as well as the rest of the nation Reaganomics probably will hurt Goldwater too Nor is he considered a match for Brown — who thrives in campaigns — in debating skills or television appeal The Democrats are financing moreover a professional drive calculated to raise from 527 to 56 percent their share of the state’s registered voters That will require registering about 12 million Democrats between now and November 98564 were signed up in just nine counties and some rural areas in a few weeks before April 28 At $125 per newly registered voter this effort will cost about $15 million Brown and Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles the certain nominee for governor are each paying 42 cents per registration — a potential total of $504000 apiece That ain’t hay (Brown expects to raise and spend only about $3 million) and new registrants can be hard to get to the polls But Speaker Willie Brown whose Democratic caucus also is putting up a share of the cost says that even 750000 new Democratic voters would ensure a big win on Election Day — right down to Assembly and congressional seats Hi-Te- ch er er ll one-on-o- ne ‘‘we’ve never won before’’ New York Times Service DOONESBURY by Garry Trudeau na- tions where political instability is chronic With the church no longer the influence for discipline it once was repressed and released tension often eventuates in “revolution” For Americans to imagine a clear cut cleavage ANDTHEDOCTORSAYS I'M IN PERFECT HEALTH SO IT'S REALLY UP ID US TO DSC!
