The series bore the name of one of its stars the beautiful collie that had become famous in motion pictures. Lassie is now in its 10th year on the Network as one of the most successful entertainment series on television. When the series had its premiere on Sept. 12, 1954, the title role was filled by the same doe that had become a fabulous film in this country personality and abroad through seven of the most popular "box-offic- e pc- tares ever made. CmT tad r m. e, first broadcast and for the next several seasons were Jan Clayton and EDen Miller, Tommy as her son Jeff, and Rettlg Cleveland ns Gamps. George The stories revolved around the Miller farm and Its household. Three yean later a new character was 'latrodaced to Lassie audiences runaway orphan named Timmy, played Jon Provost, who, by like the original Lassie, came to television from the movies. Then, after the death ef George Cleveland, who played Gramps for three yean, lone-rang- e plot development found E3fen Miller and Jeff forced to give up the farm and move to ttie city. Two new characters, Roth and Paul Martin, took ever the farm and Timmy alone with it Jeff left Lassie behind to be Timmys companion and protector. Since the fall of 1958 Jane Lockhart and Hugh Reilly have starred as the Martins; foster parents of Timmy. A new Lassie the son of the original Lassie took over the title role at about the same time. Pour yean later the grandson of tiie first lassie assumed the title role.
