Van Dellen Noisy breathing is common in babies and rarely is serious. Mother is likely to worry when strldulous or crowding sounds are produced with every breath of air. There are various causes, one of which Is laryngeal stridor. This condition also has ins origins but the commonest is a flabby epiglottis the fold that fits down over the voice box whenever swallowing occurs. This trap door prevents food and liquids from' ' entering the windpipe. The epiglottis is a membrane containing cartilage, but now and then is abnormally soft and flaps in the breeze with each breath. One pediatrician believes it Is a hangover from the fetal period when the baby lived in an aquatic environment and had to keep the larynx closed. In his opinion, the flap vibrates because the reflex was overworked before birth and is still somewhat irritable. - But, regardless of this fancy explanation, the condition is is rarely serious, and seldom persists beyond 1 year of age. The noises are less noticeable during sleep and attain self-limite- d, greater intensity in periods of excitement or physical activity. At times, the breastbone depresses with each inspiration. Should the condition persist, other causes are suspected. Examination with a laryngoscope may be Indicated so that the diagnosis can be estab. lished and proper treatment instituted. . - ITS TIME NOW TO STORE YOUR FURS ; w FREE .
