A‘ s&- '' If if ‘v i Ww This may surprise my Democratic friends but I’ve never voted a “straight ticket” ballot There are good people in both parties My Republican legislator will get my vote again this year She earned it Punching a political party's logo at the top of the ballot ignores the facts: elected leaders are people not labels The first year I could vote I was a freshman at BYU before there were many women candidates I'll never forget my mom proclaiming “I vote for the man not the party” That was who run for public office regardless of party are good people We’re lucky in Utah-m- ost candidate They all worked hard for your vote To me it’s just good manners to consider each We Utahns like to brag about what independent voters we are I’ll always be grateful for the many Republicans who voted for me especially for my reelection in 1996 Of all those who actually voted in the Attorney General’s race almost 80 voted for me That was my good fortune but even so the votes for the Republican logo almost did me in You might be surprised how Utahns voted in 1996: statewide almost 40 voted n 17 You voted mathematician have a to don’t be to figure out that the big winner was the Utah Republican Party! The odds were better than two to one Many Republican candidates got carried to victory on that boat But was the result what voters intended? Straight-Republica- Straight-Democrat- ic n What is the result of voting in Utah? All five state office holders (except me) are Republican All five federal officers are Republican (Orrin Hatch and Jim Hansen have each been in Washington for nearly a quarter century) The state legislature is 70 Republican There is little debate my friends: the Republicans make ALL the decisions In the Utah Legislature those decisions arc made behind closed doors in something called the Republican Caucus they have the votes to always get their way If our state legislature had just ten more Democrats what a difference in public discussion you’d see! Straight-Republica- In 1994 the Straight-Republica- vote in Salt Lake County swept away Dave Yocom and Jim Bradley and swept in Neal Gunnarson n Doug Short and Mary Callaghan Democrats can’t survive in Utah against two to one odds so the two-part- y system which has seived our country well will be gone citizens that means a Republican convention in March will decide who all our leaders will be For Utah If that sounds alarmist just look at the Third Congressional seat Chris Cannon is a good person but if he had a real opponent could he get away with demanding the impeachment of boy scout A1 Gore? But for the straight ticket voters in 1996 maverick Bill Orton Congress Chris Cannon got the benefit of that 40 who voted for the logo not “the man” w ould still be in At the Republican convention this past March even Cannon could not avoid a primary against a man who claimed he had been called by God to Congress Republican conventions controlled now by the Eagle Forum have gone so far off the deep end do you really want them choosing your leaders? The plight of Democrats is worsened by the trend in Utah for multimillionaire Republicans to purchase their run for political office Merrill Cook Robert Bennett and Chris Cannon pulled millions out of their wallets to win I like them all as people and it may sound harsh to say they bought their offices but how else can w'e look at it? And as our “representatives” how can multimillionaires relate to working families? Let’s be honest: Utah millionaires don’t tend to be Democrats My Grandma always said “Democrats care about walking folks Republicans care about folks who don’t have to work” A bad generalization sure but Democrats who run for office in Utah tend to be well w orking people My husband and I are saving up to fix our driveway — we’re just regular people struggling to take care of and educate our kids Lily Eskelsen is a schoolteacher she and her husband work hard to provide for their two sons Scott Leckman is a surgeon who donates much of his time his family does not live in grand style Now consider the megawealth of How can we as Democratic candidates compete with their millions when we have to earn our contributions $25 at a time? Cook-Bennett-Cann- Utah Democrats can 't compete with the double whammy of ( I) 40 on logo voters and (2) millionaire candidates I’m asking a personal favor of you Vote on November 3rd for the PERSON not logo of your choice It will take a minute or two but isn’t solid balanced leadership for Utah’s future worth it? Mom and Grandma sure would have thought so Thank von Jan Graham Paid lor by the Committee to Reelect Jan Graham |
