| Show THE CITY 11 i I 1 lne ine hints contained in the pon denpe of norval lato in di s lisue asue tot louch touch lph h a subject that la is of some ome owe interest 0 0 tb the generality of the inhabitants of this ana and other large cities in the territory it is well known that the range tauge in the immediate vicinity of this city A s getting poorer and poorer year by year jear this has been brought to a considerable extent by the continual grazing during the summer season of the various herds of cattle sent from the city but probably to an equal if not greater extent bythe by the herds of 0 cattle i owned by private individuals which are 1 tu turned rn ed out winter as well as summer summer bummer this abis athis continual drain on the range 1 impoverishes l t it and makes it necessary yearby year by year to send the public herds to a greater distance to pickup pick up a scanty meal which is much to the disadvantage of their owners who inmost in most cases are members of the laboring classe classes S the keeping of cows in a large city like this Is by no means a profitable affair under any circumstances nowa now a days it was all very well years ago when the range was near and good anil and hay cheap but inconvenient and expensive as it 1 is s now it is a necess necessity IV owing to the fact that milk and butter indispensable in a family through their scarcity can only be purchased with money or the best befit store pay and as working men in many luany branches of labor lagor here cannot always procure this kind of pay their families must el either elther ther go very aburt abort of milk and butter or they must keep a cow now to keep a cow up during the whole of the year is what no poor man can afford to do and unless it is of a very superior breed it would hardly pay any man but by paying two or three cents a day for herding during the summer from about may until the end rb idof f october a tolerable cow if she can get ZA ag dod lod feed during the time of herding tir aing slopped marn morning ing and even c inlo ing 11 will about pay her expenses of late years however sending city herds out to the range has been attend ed with little or no profit to the animals or their owners owing to the distance distano tche ache herd has to be driven and the ini lul i state of the herdin ground t say the herd leaves the city about seven jn the mornin morning and walks eight or ten miles to feed the distance traveled this tha lat surn summer bummer merli merll ic it la is about eleven afore edore it gets there then when the animals have had a reat rest and three or of our bur hours grazing it is time to start for home horne again and instead of com eom coming U home well fed and with witha a good supply y off 4 milk they hungry and und nearly dry 4 M X many any persons who ma may have been in tee fee the liable of keeping their herds on tile the 1 tali waly ge near the city have no up dou doubt douht t thought that as the range was public q property ibi perty they had as much right to 0 ae keep ep their twenty fifty or a hundred d head of stock there all the year round as ally ariy anybody body else had to se send bend nd his one or two anere during the sum summer mer months in this however they are laboring un der a mistake for special enactments to the contrary have been provided by the territorial legislature we append the clauses of the law touching this matter referred to by norval and recommend all who may be interested to persue them and to govern themselves ac cordingly sec 8 in case ease that any herd shall be found upon tho for all cost arnd arid damage arising from his neglect and tabe ta be fined at the discretion of any court having jurisdiction we understand that at a meeting of the bishops on the evening of thursday last this thih subject was under consideration era tion and etwas it was the unanimous opinion that the provisions proVi along of this jaw aw should be respected it may to parties whose interests may be aal doted 1 by such a movel movement nent that the law is somewhat partial but a little refie reflection ebion will dissipate such an impression those in the city who keep a cow cov have very few facilities for so doing and do not do it cpr the bake eake of profit but Tut liin irin in most cases through necessity it is far otherwise however with the owner of a lierd herd he keeps them for profit and the facilities iu in tue the country forli for herding erding and feeding stock are vastly superior to what they are in a city and it Is isi much nuch easier and far less expensive and inconvenient lenient for him to drive his herd a distance from efrom the city ran range gethan gothan than forthe for sor the people in the city to do BO so or to keep their animals up the year through the legislature were no doubt influenced by these considerations and others of a similar nature when they passed the law we feel convinced that in most if not all instances where it has been violated it has been through Is ignorance rn orance and that it is only necessary to fo call attention to it to have all cause of dissatisfaction and discontent removed and the interests and rights of all respected and aad promoted |
