Show The Payson Chronicle, April 17, Page 5 Just Hamblin us make money or the March of Dimes at the Associated Foods Warehouse Parfemg Lot 999 West Utah Ave., Payson APRIL by Charlatan Its fun at this time of the year to think back on the days when we were younger and think of all those pretty girls who tried out for the queens. Now dont get me wrong. The girls now are every bit as pretty and probably have just as much talent as those girls did. But, when you are little and look at all those pretty girls, they take on a different glow. They become your ideal, almost your idol! They are what you want to become when you grow up. As I looked at the pictures of the queen contestants in the paper, I couldnt help but think back to when I watched the queens ride down the street in the parades when 1 was little. I Oam-4raEIL9-2i- o' had no idea how they were chosen or when, nor was I a very good judge of beauty. What I did know was that they looked gorgeous on those floats! How proud I was when one of them waved just to me and smiled all over when they saw me. They didnt have those pasted-o- n grins we see so much now, nor did they look all bored standing there. But then maybe thats just my grown-u- p perspective shining through! Of course, there is a chance that they did wave and smile just at me because most of them worked in the drugstore and saw me quite often up town with Mama or Dad or maybe Sam. Of course, it didnt hurt any for me to be standing right next to Grandpa as they passed by. Especially when we sat on the east porch of Mas house with all the relatives. We always seemed to whoop and holler when anyone we knew went by! I dont remember when Dollie Wightman Nelson was Miss Liberty, but I do remember when her daughter, Joyce Nelson, was Miss Payson. That was before Jack Provstgaard claimed Joyce as his bride. And I do remember last year when Joyces granddaughter, Heather Shuler, was Miss Payson! My memory may be bad at times, but I do remember that far back. However, I didnt realize until just the other day that this was a four genera1 tional thing. You know, thats quite an accomplishment to have three out of four generations represented on those floats. As your new reigns begin, I hope all the queens will remember to smile prettily at all the little girls along the route. Remember that you are smiling just for them and when you wave be sure to wave just to them. They are looking at you through the eyes of a child and what they see will make a difference in their lives. They look not only at your beauty, but at how they see you on the street. They may not always know your name, but they do see you. And speaking of those pasty smiles, I dont remember seeing them on too many of the queens from this end of the county-- or even in the state, for that matter! If you think a bouquet of roses freshens up a room. ..then you I was never pretty enough to be a queen or even an attendant, but I have should see what your Gulistan Signature Dealer can do for your entire home!
