| Show complimentary in beveral several of the eastern papers we ire have seen honorable mention made of the ilon hon W ff hooper delegate to congress from utah but none more truly complimentary to him as an active thoroughgoing thorough going 0 business man and a gentleman than is conta contained ined in the following and historical sketch clipped from the baltimore republican by what would woul d s seem to be a singular coincidence ci ch thre three 0 f ath p present ebent delag delegates ga tes in congress from th e T ri ries rles are na native born eborn e marylanders among hem we recognize a native of this state hon william 11 hooper representing the territory oletah oly tah rah as the successor of dr barnhiser although the last named gentleman was an intelligent and honorable though quiet and retired sort of person the people of utah we think have done wisely in in super superseding him by the clec into 1370 pir hooper is a man of supe 0 and energy and activity fi hine fine n 1 ae manners a and address and nd who in his frank r a n a and heli hell 40 11 do much ala whatever c my me be t his hie e faults W of liis ills people to tp remove those prejudices which whether rational 7 or not have hitherto prevailed against the mormon peo people le there is something singularly interesting inte interesting 0 I 1 in in i the history of this gentleman and his conn connection ec with that peculiar people whom he now represents in the councils of the nation he was born in dorchester county on the eastern shore of our state at the old home of his family called warwick maiorand Ma manor mador norand Dorand and is a son of henry hooper and a grandson of james price residing for a f few ew years in this city employed in a mercantile house at the age of 21 he removed in 1835 to galena illinois illinoi s and engaging largely largel y in in i commerce commercial ial lal business soon accumulated a fort fortune ne i in the crash of I 1 1837 by the collapse col coi bollap lap 0 f e of the ban banks ics acs in that state his hous house etlie etile tieh te one of the largest in the west became involved winding up b by the ultimate payment ho howader waver of every dollar doliar of or liabilities hethel turned his attention to froin from st louis on the mississippi i ippi I 1 and soon acquired again a liberal fortune which was swept from him bt by the great fire in that city in 1849 added to his I 1 misfortune soon boon came a bereavement in the death of his wife and following this a total prostration of his hiss own health ile he was pronounced beyond the hope of Te covery recovery by his physician physicians and advised as a last resort to cross the plains to tu california a milder climate broken down and de dejected J acted he reached salt lake city unable to move farther in this condition he was kindly ministered to by the gentle care eare of the people of salt lake andin time was restored to health he then resolved to remain amon among those who had thus established a claim upon gis sis his gratitude entered anew into mercantile business acquired a liberal fortune and again married a lady who is his hia present companion anion anlon B g by nearly an unanimous vote he was last as year r chosen osen as representative of the territory an in congress and by his gentlemanly b bearing a rin Xun unexceptionable exceptionable character and superior antell intelligence irence has already establish est established ablis hed himself sel in I 1 n the confidence and respect of the popie at the seat of government F r w far mr hooper will wil I 1 succeed in remo nemo removing v ing the prejudices that exist in washington and elsewhere against the people of this territory we are unable to predict that lie he will do his duty as the representative of the people who elected him and advocate their rights on the floor of congress and on all proper occasions wherever he may be we have no doubt and if those who have reposed confidence in his Ns integrity t and ability are disappointed when his term of af office shall have expired we do not know who can safely be entrusted with the interests blany of any community atthe hon TV V H hooper will please accept our thanks for the files of papers and other favors received from him since the commencement men cement of the present session of co congress n g ress in which he is the delegate Z from this territory |
