Lionism was born in Chicago in the fall of 1917, at a time when people were drawing together for sustenance in a war weary world Eight years later the Magna Lions club was formed with a contingent of 50 loyal members. Now at age 55, it is still going strong although the ranks have thinned. The secret of the longevity is evident in four men who w'ere recently cited for their membership tenure. Collectively they have chalked up 115 years of community service. Weldon Matthews is a veteran who joined the group in February of 1935, three months before he was married. His interest was sparked by his father who was also a Lion. Matthews worked with his father in Lion projects when he was still in his teens. Both his father and L.C. Healy, first president of the Magna club, who was his sponsor, served as role models for the young Lion who went on to become one of the most active members in the history of the club. During the 45 years that followed Matthews not only held local offices, but worked in many district and state offices as well. He served two terms as president of the Magna club, worked through all the committees several leader of Lionism, pro- was times, many jects, and became deputy district governor. There is no one in the Magna club with longer membership and few, if any, in the entire state who are still active. Matthews has 45 pins to commemorate each milestone he has pasat least 25 of that number being perfect attendance pins. The most positive thing that I have gained through being a Lion is to know the joy of helping those less fortunate than myself, he said. There are national and international programs sed, with that affect approximately 179 nations and earn Lions worldwide respect, he added. Two members ar are Joe Ribotto and E. F. Blanchard who joined the club in 1955. Ted -- Lambert sponsored 13 consecutive years and has held every office except treasurer, including first, second and third vice president Ribotto and B. B. During this quarter of a century, Ribotto has been chairman of various committees within the club and has also worked on a district level as sight conservation chairman and with the Leo club.
