Show Open House Leonard And Lucile Hardman Celebrate Golden Wedding Mr and Mrs. Leonard Hardman will be honored at an open house to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on October 25 Fiftieth Year Of Marriaae For The Hays James Jim and Naomi Hays will be celebrating 50 years of marriage at an open house on Wednesday, October 29th from 7 to 9 p m. The occasion will be hosted by their children at the home of a daughter on 3163 South 7900 West. Jim and Naomi are residents of Magna and have been for the past 40 years, moving there in 1941 Jim was born and raised in Pans, Idaho As a young man he served in both the National Guard and the Marines, where he was stationed for two years in the Phillipines and on Guam. Shortly after returning from the marines, the Hays family moved to Montana While living there, a family outing took them to Foys Lake. When they were about to leave, Jims mother hesitated to leave, be- - West Valley City, UT. West Valley View Pg.4B Thursday, October 23, 1980 1974 Lucile has served as Sunday School and Primary teacher and as secretary in the Primary, MIA and Relief Society for a number of years in Magna After the depression Jim and Naomi returned to Salt Lake for a few years and Jim found jobs that included gardening work in Memory Grove. He also worked as a clerk in a grocery store and at the State Capitol Building During this time six children were born to them; Naomi Dee now Mrs Robet Boser., James David, Harry Edward, Kathleen Diane now Mrs. Phil Maestas, Marilyn E. now Mrs. Thomas D. Curtis, and Wayne S. Hays. Harry died when he was 19 The other children now all live in West Valley, with the exception of David who lives in Idaho Falls. With their six children they moved back to Magna a few months before Pearl Harbor. They soon traded their now home and acre of land for a 20 acre homestead, again on 2400 South. Twice they lived in a home built debt-fre- e by Jim. The second home, however, was torn down to make way for the freeway and has since been replaced by a newer model. In 1946 Jim started working at Kennecotts power plant, moving to a position as a metalurgical statistician and later as a crew clerk for the railroad. He retired in 1972, but has replced his work hours with time spent in study and research on many topics. Naomi, who was raised as an only child, treaures the companionship and closeness of her children and became involved in their activities. She has served in many LDS ward and cause she could see a lone swimmer far off in the distance. She sent Jim out to see if the swimmer needed help but when he reached the lone swimmer, he found a shy teenaged-gir- l who was as much at home in the water as on shore. She was dismayed at the thought anyone would think she might need help, but unknown to either of them at the time, this girl who swam like a fish and Jim, her would-b- e rescuer, would some day marry. s I - Vm Bmi Leonard and Lucile Hardman They now enjoy bowling with friends They are the parents of three children, Leonard Verl of California, Marilyn (Mrs Bill) Beck and Shirley (Mrs Alan K ) Allan of West Valley City The Leonard and Lucile when they were first married The celebration will be held at the Hunter ward cultural hall on 5000 Janette Avenue from 4 until 8 p m The Hardmans have lived in Magna for most of their married life But 8 years ago they had to move to make room for the Cyprus high auditorium, and in 1972 they moved to Hunter Mr. Hardman retired from Kenne-cot- t Copper in 1974 after many years of employment The Hardmans have been active members of the Pleasant Green 1st ward in Magna Leonard has served as counselor in the LDS Sunday School and MIA and in the high priest quorum as secretary. He was also a member of the Magna Mountain Riders from 1934 to Hardmans also have 12 grandchildren and 3 The Hardman family invite all friends and relatives to share in this celebration with them With all the delicious fresh fruit abounding in gardens and orchards the average cook scours the recipe books for new and delightful ways to use it all After everything is frozen, dried, bottled and eaten raw, however, there still is good stuff everywhere you look Using pears in different ways has always been a problem Bottled, fresh wuth cottage cheese, eaten out of hand, and that has been that But now no longer. Together Naomia and Jim have traveled extensively and an avid interest in history has taken them on many journeys to places in Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Ho-lLand, as well as Egypt and the v U S They would like to invite all their friends and relatives to join in this special occasion with them. They began to date and Jim, hoping to play on her sympathy, told Naomi his younger brother Ted always stole his girlfriends from him. Naomi fell for his story and Jim won the hand of his sweetheart. They were married in Polsen, Montana on the 22nd of October 1930. Jim traded his car for an acre of ground near 8000 West and 2400 South right after they were married. Not many cars traveled that stretch of road as it was unpaved and dusty in the summer and mud and muck in the winter. The Hays lived on their acre of land in a small adobe house wtih a floor of dirt, but soon moved to a tall frame home, affectionately known by the townspeople as the old piano box. The depression was on and times rabbits were hard, but home-growand lots of carrots found their way to of carthe table. The rots in their diet tinted their skin and turned the whites of their eyes yellow.
