in imminent imme nent danger of assault from those belonging 0 to another clan with which they may have been at warmer variance they have not carried shotguns shot guns for the purpose of ampre pre effectually doing up or resisting the work of ot death if thep they they and their adversaries should chance under certain circumstances to look each other in the face such scenes have been universally deprecated by the peace loving t and law abiding portion of community but seemingly there has been no way to prevent their occurrence it lias has been impossible to enforce the laws of the territory against ef menders offenders to any extent without federal judicial interference interfere ice in behalf of the guilty and if the citizens had bad rose up in their might and expelled from the country all the lorse horse thieves black legs and murderers that har hal ha taken up their abode here in consequence of the protection extended to them as has been done with such intruders in other territories and in some of the states of the Uni L onit would have been considered an act ef of treason against the government of the united states and earth and etell would have been moved to another crusade against utah to exterminate the people because they did not quietly submit to such diabolical act acta sanet and practices as those es citizens of the L united cited states as they are commonly called to designate them from the 11 mormons formans Mor lor for mons chose to introduce an and practice in their midst under these and other inhibit inhibiting im circum stances that have existed till of late the enforcement of the law against such characters and especially when whon their operations have been confined to themselves has not been as strictly insisted upon by the territorial authorities ties as it would have been if circumstances had favored the execution of the penal statutes of the territory without federal intervention tion murder after murder has hag been committed with impunity within the precincts of great salt lake city till such occurrences do not seemingly attract much attention particularly when the murdered have had bad hadtke the reputation of being thieves and murderers or of ot associating acim with such characters from day to day and whenever they had a chance of all the shooting affairs that have taken place since such things have been the order of the day in this city the one that came off on thursday night last resulting in the deaths of myron brewer and R keitt Johnston was unquestionably done up the most thoroughly and those who guns or muskets over revolvers when quick and effective work was intended the circumstances as derived from the evidence given on the investigation by the coroner and from other reliable sources ara his business and what he came from camp floyd for his special business being to follow a company that had gone east and steal their mules but before leaving he intended to take a couple of scalps said that his pistols were in first rate order and all was right and that he felt first rate late in the evenin evening t johnston and brewer were in one of the stores conversing with some of their acquaintances and on the way to the place plage where they were boarding at about eleven they were both shot evidently with guns or muskets loaded with balls and buckshot which took effect on the left shoulder and side ol 01 0 each inflicting many wounds of which they instantly died some of the policemen on duty hearing the reports of the guns proceeded immediately in the direction from whence they thu came and soon found the bodies of the slain lyng lying within a few feet of each other near the ther corner of east temple and second south streets but the slayers had bad fled and have not as yet been found an inquest was held on the bodies ly by jeter clinton esq the next morning and the jury rendered a verdict according to the facts who the daring fellows cereas it is hardly possible that associations of late haye have not been good brewer was one of the principals in the forgery case last summerford summer for which McKenzie Mc renzle Kenzle who was anvel inveigled led into the snare by hirwas him vas was convicted on the evidence of brewer wallace wailace and others who planned the concern and when detected escaped justice by giving evidence against the one who was the least guilty of any connected with the affair he was subsequently indicted in the third district court for that offence and held to bail in the sum of dollars to appear and answer at the next term of the court johnston often boasted as we have been in informed fori forr aed ned 0 os the atrocious acts committed by hirm him in years gone by and has been quite pro i fuse in his bis threats of violence
