Institutes of Religion are located in Salt Lake City, Logan, ' Provo, Cedar City, Ephraim, St. George, Price and Ogden in Utah; Moscow and Pocatello, Ida.; Laramie, Wyo.; Los Angeles and Berkeley, Cal.; Tempe, Tucson, Ariz.; Reno, Nev., and Ed--: monton, Canada. The First Seminary Thomas J. Yates, now a daily ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple, was principal of that first seminary. The standard works of the Chtirch were the only textbooks in those days. It was suggested, according to a history of the Granite Seminary, oldest in the Church, that the program would "produce faith" among the youth and teach "girls to be ladies and boys to be gentlemen." Opening of the classes was by a song and prayer, as is a part of the curriculum today. In 1918 the program had spread to nine seminaries, including one in Star Valley, and during 1919 "work was carried on by Correspondence" .during the flu epidemic. Gathers Momentum By 1923, gathering momentum each year, graduation exercises became a part of the planning needs and that year, of the 5,000 enrolled, 441 graduated, of which 35 were from Granite Seminary. J. Spencer Cornwall played- the march at exercises and Adam S. Bennion addressed the graduates. Also in 1923 Seminaries became known as L D S Seminaries. Contrast these early years with the modern teaching methods of 1953. Today every course has a textbook, students have uni- form notebooks, a catalog library of facts, information and Church data is available. Many seminaries have projection machines for movies, slides, electrical transcriptions of the Old and New Testament and the Church History by drama professionals, a music library with religious and classical music, maps, visual aids of all types. In addition, modern new buildings in with firemany places are being constructed places for fireside chats,- dancing, socials and parties and outdoor facilities about the bililding so that young minds are given every opportunity to be guided in the truth, for surely "the Glory of God 1a Intelligence." ) I- - - 1- 1 I '' '' . : li;.7'::4i...7.., i '... :. ,,, 1 1 ' 1 ,.,,,: ; ,,;. - 0 '' !, .::?
