Nine daye after Brigham's return Joseph Smith came to Brigham's log house and received a rev- elatiol, which instructed Brigham. 7ft is no more required at your hand to, leave your family as in times past, for your offering is acceptable; I have seen your labor And toil in journeying for my name, I therefore command you to send my word abroad, arid take special care . of your family from this time, henceforth ,and forever." ' Although he spent the principal part of his time thereafter in Nauvoo assisting Joseph Smith, Brigham Young found time to fix up his log cabin home, drain, fence and .cultivate his land and provide for his family: ' Sattlar's Hornas An unusual word picture of Nauvoo in the Millennial Star. in 1842 explains that the city was growing. Many thousands were settled and more still coming daily as emi; grants. it states that the "buildings are mostly temporary cabins, built of wood, and are very small, unfinished, and inconvenient;- but they are such as are generally t erected- in the beginning of new settlements in every part of the country, and will soon give place to those of brick and stone. ;..,....,,..::,,zl,:... 1i , :1 ,,' , Brigham Young. This home and others like it which housed the early Church leaders was built in Nauvoo's heyday when the city was mushrooming toward a 20,000 population. This was 20 times its present size. When. Brigham Young first arrived in the Nauvoo area, then known as Commerce, he couldn't find suitable quarters for himself and his family. He went across the river and found living space in one room of an old military barracks., Here he was residing with his family when, sick and unable to travel even the 30 sods to the river without assistance, he left for a mission to England, Sept. 14, 1839. He left his wife sick and a babe 10 days old and all of his other children so ill they were ' unable to wait upon each other. ,.a ..;'-'- k'' i ..0.0,4 6'.."'.....:'''''',r:';oii:10; 7,,,,, y,' '''''..,f,. 4 71 ,!!,; ..... ..," .
