Show ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT CAMPUS PODCAST will bring more than just news to Westminster MEAGAN RUMPH STAFF REPORTER 1 V r ASWC Vice President, Trey Hansen, has been hard at work developing a podcast for Westminsters campus. After receiving more than 200 signatures from students interested in the prospect of a campus podcast, Hansen took the issue to ASWC senate and was granted funding to get the project going. Working with faculty members Ru Wood and Matt Baker in the Communication Department, Hansen has secured one of the recording studios in the Lab. Wood has been researching needed equipment and the logistics of producing a podcast. Hansen will be using this Fall semester to develop a training process and protocol for producing the podcast, with the hopes of launching the first episode this spring. He envisions the podcast working with The Forum to deliver news, event information and local culture to the campus community. His hope is that the podcast will evolve into part of the curriculum for The Forum course, with each student enrolled developing one podcast per semester, in place of one article assignment. He has been working with The Forums faculty advisor, Matt Baker, to revise the course curriculum in hopes of having it completed for the next academic year. My goal as ASWC Vice President is to create as many opportunities for students as possible, Hansen said. In addition to providing new opportunities for students, a podcast could mean another resource for advertising campus events as well as another connection point for alumni, faculty and staff of the college. Wood expanded on this idea, adding that a campus podcast could be developed into different shows for sporting event coverage, guest lectures and even a comedy show. With this much variety, Wood said it would be easy to produce a new show each week. Its all about the creativity of the students producing the media content, Wood said. Students working on content wont be limited by a studio location. According to Wood, the only necessary equipment to produce a podcast would be a laptop and a USB microphone, making recording from any location, high-quali- ty even off-camp- us, a reality. Wood said a podcast would help students into develop emergent the to journalists, adding writing for print journalism skills currently available to students through The Forum class. Both Hansen and Wood see the benefits such a medium would bring to campus. A podcast would bring huge notoriety to the school, Wood said. Hansen, ASWC Vice President, and Ru Wood, Communication faculty member, share ideas in the Bassis Center. Together, they've been collaborating on a weekly podcast for Westminster.
