Show SEPTEMBER 3, 2014 Westminster College's Student Hsrjspaper Since 1930 Students make a splash with the ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE Matt Lauer did it. Oprah Winfrey did it. Mitt Romney did it. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was the trend of the summer and more Westminster students are participating now, as well. Westminster students have boldly filmed themselves scrunching their face, yelling and shivering from the bitter cold. Five seconds of pain seems like nothing compared with what people with ALS have to deal with, said first year student Olivia Filiom, who conquered the challenge twice. The challenge involves filming a person getting drenched with buckets of ice cold water then posting the video on social media where he or she can nominate others to do the same. Those nominated have 24 hours to post a video of themselves getting doused or else donate to the ALS Association. The ALS Associations mission is to provide care services to people with ALS and their families. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerve cells that control voluntary muscles. Gradually, these muscles weaken and waste away. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge generated awareness and raised over 94 million dollars for the ALS Association compared to the two million made during July and August of 2013, according to the ALS Association. Students who did the challenge raised awareness and donated a small amount of money to an ALS charity of their choice. Those who have not challenged themselves plan to donate to the cause in the future. I plan to donate even though I was not nominated, said Mackenzie Crow, junior business major. A little bit helps.
