Show 4 CAMPUS FORUMFORTNIGHTLY.COM Meet the Candidates Presidential Search Continued from Page 1 Brandon J. Lloyd, an assistant to the Presidents Office and sophomore business management major, said the student forum is an excellent opportunity to speak with the presidential candidates. Being able to speak with them and seeing how broad each one is, they are all very diverse and have very unique ideas, Lloyd said. Ive been very pleased about the caliber of candidates that weve had brought to the campus. Lloyd is looking for a president who can make a large impact and really focus on student development and curriculum. Leslie Brown, a senior neuroscience major, attended every student forum. She is looking for a president who will analyze the LE program and look for ways to improve it. After attending the luncheon for Dr. Karla Hughes, Brown believed she was a good candidate. Shes already dropped the GE requirements at another school and shes made sure that its just whats crucial, she said. Brown is also looking for a candidate who interacts with the students. A president who works among the faculty is getting too far away from the students and too far away from the purpose of the school, she said. Interaction with students was a common concern among students. Chris Worel, a senior political studies major, said he wants an outgoing president, someone who is more involved with the student body and who understands and is willing to analyze the school in terms of functionality. Senior economics major Karl Gerner shared a similar mentality. From a student perspective, I would like to see a president who freely and of their own accord wants to interact with students, Gerner said. In general, I would like to see a president who is really committed to the idea of what Westminster sees itself, and what it strives to be. Another core concern that was addressed at the student forum was the rising cost of education. I would like a president who would focus both on increasing value and dealing with the expanding costs of education, said Hillary Pierce, a junior political studies major. Gerner has been impressed with the candidates, but the of interacting experience with the candidates has had some unanticipated results. Meeting these candidates has made me really realize how much I appreciate President Bassis, he said. Even though students felt the candidates were impressive, there was still concern. The largest concern was the move from a public institution to a private one. Its a completely different system, so you have to adjust to that system, Hillary Pierce said. The search committee and the board will have to pick between experience and being able to just go, rather than someone with a new perspective who might move the college where it needs to go. Despite the concerns, students were very pleased with the candidates brought in. is Now the decision-makin- g left to the board of trustees. If I receive any feedback I will see it as well as it will be passed on to the rest of the members of the committee, Jonathon Pierce said. We truly do take into account everybodys comments. Feedback can be sent to or to "This is the place I have been looking for." Provost and vice president of academic affairs at Morehead State University since 2007.
