Show Music Continued from page 12 that era. So there are going to be two concertos by Bach, two by Vivaldi, and one by contemporary composer, Albinoni." Donna Vogel, a board member for UCCD, said, Im looking forward to Gerry Elias playing the violin in the Bradenburg Concerto. She said the last time she heard him play the music gave me chills. Dupuy said, Its a unique concert because its Salt Lakes only all Baroque musical event. It includes a small chamber orchestra with harpsichord, and its in a very intimate setting, which gives people the opportunity to see the musicians up close and to feel a part of the music. It also transports people to an earlier day, to Venice or Italy, in the 17th century, and so it really is something unique to our musical community. Elias said he enjoys working in collaboration with UCCD because, I think what they do is totally consistent with my view of the way the world should be made better, which is personal contacts among people around the world. Elias said, UCCD brings all these young people from all over the world to experience what life is like in the U.S. and that kind of bridge building really is the key to the future. So for us to be part of what UCCD does is not only a natural kind of relationship, but it really focuses on what they do so wonderfully. Vogel said, I encourage people to come. She said that even if someone is not into classical music, they will leave feeling rewarded. Dupuy said, Our audience is composed of both music aficionados, as well as supporters of UCCD. Many people use it to kick off their holiday season because it creates the spirit of goodwill and nothing can be conveyed better as the universal language of peace than music. J? The investment committee is very important to the students because they essentially manage the colleger savings used for future programs and projects and scholarships, said van Duyvendijk The people on the committee have proven their worth in their own investments and companies and now as board of trustee members use that knowledge for the colleges benefit. ASWC President Brody Leven is the student representative on the institutional planning and effectiveness committee. According to Leven, the main focus of this committee is to analyze what is working and what is not working for the students of Westminster. The committee looks into various learning programs, such as the mentoring program and the internship program. We look into these programs and analyze if they are helping the students the way we want them to, said Leven. We expand on the positives and negatives and come up with a way that will advance the programs even further. Each committee will vote on possible solutions to present to the board of trustees on Friday during the general session. The board will then evaluate these proposed solutions and vote on them. During the meeting, faculty and staff also present the progress Westminster College is currently making. This past meeting Associate Provost for Diversity and Global Learning Bridget Newell presented the current partnerships Westminster College is now a part of. These include global partnerships with China and India. Newell went on to present a partnership with Brazil that is currently in the works. It has been a pleasure for me to represent the student voice, because the board listens without reserve, said van Duyvendijk Due to these meetings, I highly promote activism in ASWC to increase learning outside of the classroom and internships. This was an overall amazing experience for me, said Leven. The board of trustees is really there for us, the students. They are just truly great people that want to see the students succeed and grow. rp The Forum is hiring a Business Manager If you enjoy sales and want to learn more about advertising, email your resume to to Krista at forumeditorwestmins tercollege . edu VOLUME XUII: ISSUE 7 WES7MINSTERFORUM.NET NOVEMBER 24, 2009 |
