Show Fund . Continued from page 1 4 .v. f - - i i ; opportunity for Westminster students next year. Even though I will be graduated, it is a good feeling that I could leave something good behind for the students in the future years. Requests for funding for all clubs, organizations, students and administration happen through April until the deadline announced by the Budget Committee. After this deadline, ongoing funding requests can occur. These requests will still be considered as long as funding is available. Late requests can only be given a third of the amount paid by the Budget Committee and ratified by the Senate. On Nov. 16 the Senate discussed an option to have the Opportunity Fund pay for a third or $400 of a trip if people are short on money for May Term. It was argued during the ASWC Senate meeting that this is not a fund for students towards their school credits, but strictly to provide funding for special opportunities for current .Westminster students and ASWC clubs and organizations. According to the ASWC Financial Code, the Opportunity Fund may not be used to support any group other than ASWC clubs. Requests from publications, the Executive Cabinet, Senate and Student Activities Commission are not to be permitted. Given the current financial code, it is unlikely that anyone who applies for this grant for May Term will be accepted. Cooper Henderson, Senator of Business said, Even in this recession, Westminster has done great things and has shown an excellent amount of drive that give the students the opportunity to broaden their education. rj Petitions r- -; f, . Continued from page 2 Junior Hailey Hall was the office assistant for Montano. Hall said, She (Montano) was given notice to fix a few things, and we were in the process of working on them." According to Hall, only a few weeks later Montano was fired without anytime to implement those changes. Hall now works for Newell. Montanos projects have become Newells responsibility. Hall said, Newell brought Montano in for programming, but Montano was more interested in creating connection and community for the diverse student population on campus. As far as how Newell is handling her new work load, Hall said, She is mostly concerned about the students. A lot of them have questions, but she is bound by confidentiality so she wants to tell them, but she cant. Newell said, The college doesnt discuss personnel issues because we really have to respect peoples privacy. Students are also passing around a petition. Young said, I wrote the petition, soliciting feedback from students, and then printed and distributed it to students on campus, each with a section of signature lines to be filled. Hall said, The basics of it are that we want Montano back. Students dont think it mil happen, but they want to get it out that they are not happy. They also want the firing process to be revised. Junior Joi Logan headed the front to making a change in the firing process by presenting the ASWC Senate with a Resolution of the Dismissal Process. Logan said, I presented it to the Senate, we voted and passed it. Im starting to feel like the administration doesnt value the impact of student involvement and its importance to our social well-bein- g. - Joi Logan The resolution states that students should have a say when administration dismisses a faculty or staff member that is in position to socially impact students. Logan said, As students we make the college what it is. I think the faculty should want to hear our opinions of them. Logan said she wrote this resolution to ensure that students are heard. I dont want to speak for all students, but I think I can when I say, we want our voices to be heard, Logan said. Im starting to feel like the administration doesnt value the impact of student involvement and its importance to our social well-bein- g. y Thanksgiving Continued from page 2 as many students to take advantage of this dinner as possible. Prior to the dinner, Jessica Alford the general manager said in a phone interview, This year we expect to have around 200 students attend the dinner. Alford said that when preparing for this dinner the most difficult part is getting all the turkey, because they try to buy all of the turkeys locally instead of ordering them from Sodexo. Alford said the Thanksgiving dinner is just a lot of fun for our chefs because they dont get to do this too often. One of our chefs is from the South and he loves making stuffing, so he is especially excited. Alford said that the main reason Sodexo provided this dinner was because they wanted the students to be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner while at school, and also because was fun, and because it was tradition. Not to mention we the Sodexo staff like to celebrate holidays too. THE GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club hosted a vegetarian potluck Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in The Environmental Center. All students on campus were invited to attend. Prior to the dinner, Kelsie DeFrancia a member of the Garden Club said they were expecting about 20 students to attend. DeFrancia said the dinner was important for the Garden Club to host because the Garden club tries to inform individuals about sustainable eating, and hopefully this vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner will really help to reinforce the VOLUME XLIII: ISSUE 7 i ft ' ' r kr; v v j - The Garden Clubs Potluck Thanksgiving Dinner. ideas and values of sustainable eating. DeFrancia said in order to prepare for the dinner the Garden Club worked hard at getting the word out about the dinner so that all students had the opportunity to attend. She also said the Garden Club was responsible for providing drinks and dessert for the dinner. THE AIRPORT SHUTTLE In another preparation for the holiday, Westminster College offers shuttles to and from the airport. The shuttles to be dropped off at the airport begin early on Wednesday morning and continue until Wednesday evening. The pickup times are from Sunday evening to Monday evening. To ride the shuttle, students must RSVP either through email or in the Student Life Office. Upon departure to the airport all students 14 leaving at that time will meet outside of the Student Life Office five minutes before their actual departure time. It is important that students be there right on time because the shuttle will not wait due to the strict schedule. Students at Westminster were also busy planning for the Thanksgiving holiday. DeFrancia said she was going home for the holiday to celebrate with her parents and some other relatives. Another student Katy Atencio said she was staying here for Thanksgiving because it is too far to travel home, and her work schedule wouldnt allow her to go home. As Thanksgiving rolls around the corner students must also prepare for the inevitable finals week. Atencio said, Thanksgiving is an especially nice time because its good to have a break before finals and its also a good time to relax with friends or family. f |
