Show 1 9th annual Poetry Series begins Sept. 20 Spring semester mixed-genr- e workshop adds new cpmponent to series The Joey Hcllning StaffWriter The Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry Series will celebrate its nineteenth year of bringing award-winnipoets to Westminster. This years series will include poetry readings and book signings by D.A. Powell, Maria Melendez, Luci Tapahonso, Nance Van Winckel, J.P. Dancing Bear and Madeleine Mysko. Natasha Saje, associate professor of English at Westminster and the director of the series for the past decade, said she is very pleased with the diversity of the series this year. Saje is in charge of choosing the poets as well as writing the necessary grant involved in bringing them to Utah. Sometimes I know the poets only through their work, sometimes I know them personally, but I always love some aspect of their work and the aesthetic diversity makes for a vibrant series, said Saje of her choice of poets for this years event. The series is made possible by the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks endowment and a grant from Salt Lake Citys Zoo, Arts and Parks program. Powell for reading. for an entire semester. teach Westminster at poets This spring, Nance Van Winckel will teach an introduction to creative writing course and an upper-lev- el mixed-gen- re workshop (flash fiction and prose poetry). The workshop will be open to both students and com4:30-7:- 20 munity members and will be held Tuesdays, p.m., from Jan. 8 to April 22. This is a great opportunity for students to work with someone who doesnt normally teach in Utah, said Saje. ng u J follow. D.A. Powell is the author of three books of poetry: Tea, Lunch and Cocktails. A Publishers Weekly review of his first book said, Powells discoed-o- currently teaches at Utah State University. The second event of the series will feature poet Luci Tapahonso on Oct. 25 in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall. Tapahonso is the author of three childrens books and five books of poetry. She won the Storyteller of the Year award and the Lifetime Achievement award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas. She is currently a professor of American Indian Studies and English at the University of Arizona in Tuscon. A book signing sponsored by Sam Wellers Zion Bookstore will follow. Pamela Brown, a senior this year at Westminster, attended last years workshop and said, It was amazing.
