Show - Water, air 'disappointing' for Utah residents Continued from page 1 Many people and their pets use Parleys Creek for recreational. They swim in it, they fetch for sticks in it and when its deep enough, some people swim in it. One attraction of the creek crosses under the conjunction of Interstate 80 and Interstate 215. Among locals its known as the mouth of Parleys Canyon. Water entering a large pipe is dammed up by thrill seekers on the upper side of the stream, which is then released in a torrent of water that propels them through the pipe. Half the entertainment of ending the hike here is watching the people come blasting out of the tube, said Grover. I just wish they would haul all their equipment that they use to dam up the stream away when they leave. "Trash doesn't surprise me. Surprise is a word I would use when someone gives me flowers. This is just disappointing..." Stephanie Duer Coordinator, Salt Lake City Water Conservation Department of Public Utilities Salt Lake City Water Conservation Coordinator for the Department of Public Utilities Stephanie Duer has concerns for this part of Parleys Creek as well as other creeks and streams around the Salt Lake Valley. She wasnt surprised to see pictures of the creek littered with trash. Trash doesnt surprise me. Surprise is a word I would use when someone gives me flowers, said Duer. This is just disappointing because its all located inside a watershed area. Duer understands the importance and need for clean Salt Lake City creeks, streams and rivers. She also has an interest in Westminster. Duer helped teach a May Term class titled Xeriscap-in- g at Westminster. The class was designed to teach stu VOLUME XL!: ISSUE 3 dents about water-wis- e plants and landscaping methods. Its all in effort to reduce my footprint, said Duer. "Westminster has the ability to be more responsive to community concerns than other schools." Stephanie Duer Watching water usage isnt just important to her because its her job, but because she cares about the environment she lives in. Her office garbage can was empty '6 except for one piece of clear tape that she had tried to salvage. The recycling bin in her office was full. A plastic recyclable cup on Duers desk had printed on it, You can fill this cup 7,314 times a year with the water youll save by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth. The reason why Duer has interests in Westminster is because she describes the campus as being a place where things can get accomplished. One accomplishment that Westminster participated in was Water Week last spring. I have a special relationship with Westminster, said Duer. Westminster has the ability to be more re- - |
