Show c n v-- The Forum Page4 October 2002 1, Robin Williams Shows Sinister Side Just the Action Please Jessica Faulkner Staff Writer With over 8 million viewers by September 16, 2002, One Hour Photo blew us all away with its creepy story line. Seymour Sy Perish, played by Robin Williams, is a photo technician in a suburban store called SavMart. Sy looks for love in all the wrong places. His lonely, anonymous face haunts viewers when noticing that Sy definitely isnt your average everyday photo boy. Instead of taking the film, developing it, and sending people on - their way in an hour, Sy The Photo Guy, gets dragged into the lives of his customers. Particularly the Yorkins-Nin- a, Will and their son Jake. The family is so busy with their designer lifestyle, that they dont pay much attention to the psychotic photo clerk who adores them. These photo fiends have been taking their pictures to Sy for the past six years. Every time they bring him film he makes an extra set for himself to hang on his wall at home. Even though Sy is your ideal employee (neat, smiling, and helpful), we see his psychotic side early in the movie when he gets mad at Larry, the photo machine repairman. This is when his boss, played by Gary Cole, starts to see that Perish isnt as ideal as he thought. The confrontation stirs between Sy and his boss for the rest of the movie. The cinematography ly pulls you into the photo real- lab in SavMart. It seems as though it is in a complete different dimension from the other parts of the store. The store is always bright and white, and you can hear the fluorescent lights buzzing in the a back round. Williams does a good job obsessing over the little things. He views each picture his customers give him as a work of art. , One Hour Photo strong- ly contrasts most movies done by Williams. We are quirky characters in Mrs. Doubtfire, Bicentennial Man, and Patch Adams. In the film Insomnia we see more of his fiery side, its odd that we see two movies in a row, done by Williams, in which he plays the so called bad guy. One Hour Photos style is a lot like the movie American Beauty with its dark story line, deep plot, and loneliness. The difference between the two movies, however, is that Kevin Spaceys character in American Beauty understands emotions and life, Sy, played by Robin Williams, does not. This movie is proof that Williams is a great actor. He manages to disturb without murder or mayhem. A more typical movie would have turned Sy into a mass murderer, instead he chooses his actions and words to track down the man who destroyed his perfect family. His ultimate revenge is hard to understand, and also hard to watch, but we soon understand the intensity of his actions. I wish directors and writers would be resolved to make movies Contributing Writer Last week I didnt see a groundbreaking Scorsese or Kubrick film. If I had, my review may have been more thoughtful, but any kind of thought directed toward the movie I saw, would be a mistake worse than Duane one way or another, i.e. if they want to make a sci-f- i, action, thriller with terrifying dragons, then they should make that and try to not get tripped up with small, unimportant things like character and or plot development. Rudds helmet toss, losing the game for the Cleveland Browns a few weeks ago. The tantamount loss I refer that gave to is the us Reign of Fire, the film of todays review. Fortunately, because Im as poor as dirt, I didnt have to pay for this movie. I expected decent effects and some brainless violence which would all be held together by a solid, but childish plot. This was not the case. The effects were more or less okay, but it was obvious that this movies goal was to humanize the story anti-tale- What happened to the good nt , ol Schwarzeneggar days, when action movies were made of a lot of stereotypes and violence? Thats all these movies need and they should try stay true to themselves. Since I have control of both of my thumbs, I give it two thumbs down.
