Show October The Forum 1, 2002 Lets Talk About Steve Peterson Staff Writer Students learned about sexually transmitted infections, Utah sexual methods and other uses for Altoids breath mints during the Sex in the Dark seminar presented by the Students for Choice club, on Thursday night jin the Tingey Lounge of Behnken Hall. Contrary to the rumors on campus, there will be no sex here tonight, said junior Aly Ainscough, President of Students for Choice, at the beginning of the seminar. This statement was met by upset groans from the audience of 25 students, a few of which were couples. Joining Ainscough as moderator and material expert was Autumn Chadboum, a representative from Planned Parenthood. Sex: Page 3 Students Get Serious in the Dark Students arrived at 8 p.m. and were provided with a flashlight, a 3 x 5 note card and a nametag. Each student was asked to write his or her name on the nametag, and to write a personal question about sex on the note card. They then were able to enjoy complimentary pizza and soda before sitting in a circle in Tingey Lounge. After being seated, each student placed his or her note card into a pile in the center of the room. The note cards were then mixed up and redistributed randomly amongst the participants to maintain the anonymity of the questioners. The lights in Tingey were then shut off and the room was immersed in darkness. Students used the flashlights to read the questions on their note cards in succession around the room. One of the first questions asked was, What are blue balls? Quick to respond, expert Tim Jensen said, It is basically when a guy is going to town and theres no release. The pressure builds up and causes pain, but the testicles dont actually turn blue. Chadboum then said that this problem actually happens to women too. Another question asked was, What is the easiest STD to catch? Ainscough said that STDs are now known as STIs, or sexually . transmitted infections, because they are infections and not diseases. Most can be cured, she said. The most common STI in Utah is Chlamydia, said Chadboum. Another participant, shrouded in darkness, asked, Does shaving down there make you more susceptible to infections? Confused, tion about sex and enjoy out, Like your legs? Once some genuine laughs. Many booths, sponsored by the Westminster Students for Political Awareness, have been set up around campus to get Westminster students involved in the voting process. Its great that were finally getting college students to be politically aware, said sophomore , Brady Johnson. A competition between Westminster and other colleges is going on, to see how many students will pledge to vote. The winning school will recieve educational grants awarded. Voting packets, stickers, handouts and registration forms are all being given to students who visit these booths. Its been fun getting involved in the voting , booths, but also challenging, because many students at Westminster are apathetic about politics and dont think their votes count, said Freshman Jo Schaeffer. The booths also handed out raffle tickets for the VOTE?! AND , Dunk 'Your- - drawing on September 26 at 11:45 in Tanner Plaza. Every student who pledged to vote was able to vote for a faculty or staff member to get dunked on September 26 at 12:00. Teachers on the voting sheet were: Nancy Pfeifer, Mark Feme, Marsha Thomas, Bruce Nye, Chris Cline, Roger Ignatius, Brian VoT, & Jorgensen, and David Goldsmith. Booths were also sponsored by the Political Awareness Club, Pre-LaSociety and the Philosophy Club. The Political Awareness Club is having a General Elections Week in w the 2n or 3rc Week of October.
