He just didnt grasp the technology he hasnt yet figured out his VCR and was confused enough to verbally answer the computerized voice on the telephone. She cant her you, I explained. What am I supposed to do? He kept asking, so I would take the phone in time to hear the computerized operator say, Im sorry youre having trouble with your voice mail system. Please hang up and try again. It took six attempts just to record his greeting on the service. In my limited knowledge of such systems, I told him that using the telephone keys was like using a computer keyboard; for example, pushing the pound key was the same as pushing enter to initiate a command on a computer. The interjections were Oh, is that that looking thing? and What do these star things mean? Finally he refuted my analogy by saying, Liz,. I wouldnt know. Ive never used a tic-tac-t- oe computer. Never used a computer? My ther is a very bright man, but he could never survive in my world using the knowledge he gained in his. I must say it is impressive that he is attempting to grasp certain after all, it is very technologies easy to ignore things like voice mail in Hinckley, Utah. I value what my parents have taught me and are still teaching me, but I realize that the cycle has changed to them adapting to my experience in order to not follow the ungraceful demise of their Hinckley peers. All it took was 24 hours and an attempt at understanding a voice mail system to complete Dan Horn, ventriloquist and puppeteer, will present a comedy act tonight at 7 p.m. in Gore Auditorium. Horn has performed professionally for 13 years, including appearances on Comic Strip Live, Sunday Comics, Comedy Club Network, and An Evening at the Improv. But before you pull out the banners and pen the promises, consider the criticism that will come with the office. Valid or invalid, the students on this campus have a right to express their opinions. As a representative of the Westminster student body, it will be your position to listen and respond even if the constitution doesnt spell it out as such; p. " |
