Show Each of the candidates was asked the following questions: What motivates you to be an executive officer? What problems do you see and how will you address changes for these problems? The responses of the candidates are printed exactly as they were submitted. John Rech: student with traditional values and commitments Non-tradition- al My name is John Rech, and I am currently majoring in Economics. What mouvates me to run for president of ASWC is the desire to be an active part of Westminsters campus life, and community. My outgoing personality and school and community participadon, as well as my past job experiences are the tools that I plan to use if I am elected president. The student populadon has changed vastly over the past decade. More and more students pour onto Westminsters campus, mingling with the younger traditional students. We no longer have a large traditional student body. I am a non- tradiuonal student with traditional values and commitments. I feel that I can arouse the enthusiasm of both tradiuonal and students, as well as graduate students. In the course of a year, I hope to open communicadons with all students by scheduling regular open forums and seeing that students know about them well in advance. I would ;: like to use the Forwn more topublicize ASWC events, as well as student concerns. Being a part of Westminsters governing body should interest all students, they need to know that their concerns will be addressed. I plan on being very visible on campus. I have volunteered my umc for in the past, and have spent many hours working in the Dean of Students office. I know how important it is to be available, especially for ? a good cause such as this. The lack of involvement of most students in their college government is a problem, I and needs to be pursued. plan on making it a number one priority my entire term. I would also like to foster a good relauonship with the faculty, administradon, and students. I would appreciate your support, and thank you for your dme. . non-tradiuo- non-tradidon- . Sub-for-San- al ta John Rech nal Phil Takis knows both sides of the college road Since my letter to the editor a few weeks ago, I have been plagued and applauded by many students on campus. Some have said that I am clueless and I dont know what I am talking about. Others agree wholheartedly that the current president is doing a lousy job. The objeedve of my letter was to sdmulate the students and motivate the president. I feel that it succeeded in doing both. Discussions among students have brought forth candidates for office. I hope that as a result of my bringing up the creek issue, WCEE has looked into the matter. Also, the senate meeting for concerned students have been initiated, its a shame that it has taken this long. Some people think that I know more than anyone else because I work in Bamberger Hall. Well, it s really, that through my desire to understand the current changes and focuses of the colleges administration, I have taken the time to explore these issues. It is more useful for a leader to know both sides of the issue than it is to have a lopsided understanding. - Some people believe that I didnt know both sides of the issues that I brought up in my letter, but is it wrong to trust the words of an officer of the student body? Granted I was wrong about the duties of the ASWC President, but through my own concepts of a president T made the mistake. A sood leader is someone w ho knows how to motivate people into discovering what believe should be accomplished. To do so you must understand that most roads are they two-wa- y streets and can only be traveled if you understand where both directions lead, fcel that I have been down both sides of the college road and know when to follow road slow signs, down, and speed up.
