Show Opinions What did you do for spring break? Bill Cuthbertson . I didnt Heather Bush Junior, psychology I dont think they should call it spring break because its still winter! Also, its irt the middle of the semester, so I spent most of my time writing papers Sophomore, English Stephanie Sherman I worked full time as much as I could. Im saving money so I can go to Cuernavaca in May. Senior, English and history do shit for spring break, dammit! by Blessing Ream Photos by Temmie Fleming Forum stctff reporter Brandi Gutkc Junior, English I wrote papers for all of my classes and worked. Its a dumb time of the year to have spring break Every student, not just A.S.W.C., has a voice students about campus issues and how they felt about the criticism. Several people were upset with Takis because he is merely a student. If he doesnt like how things are, they said, he should join a committee to change things. Several commented thatTakis should become involved with A.S.W.C. if he doesnt like the job the current administration is doing. Now take a moment to think about that attitude. If the only people who have the right to complain about social conditions arc those people in positions of power, this world would be a frightening place. A.S.W.C. is an abbreviation for Associated Students of Westminster College. This means that it' represents the students of the. college, which Takis is. I dont know Takis, and I dont necessarily agree with each point of his letter, but I will not be one to say that he doesnthave the right to verbalize his concerns because he isnt on a committee. While better routes could have been taken in expressing his opinions, and less aggression expressed by Tamera Evans Forum steffi writer - With the A.S.W.C. elections looming over us, I thought now would be a good time to confront the attitude about the student organization that has been roaming the corridors of this college. The Jan. 19 issue of the Forum contained a letter to the editor written by student Phil Takis. He expressed his concerns regarding the current A.S.W.C. administration. While Takis was the only student to sign the letter, he clearly stated that the letter was the result of a discussion with friends. In response to his letter, the Forum received a letter with 29 signatures defending A.S.W.C. President Tonya Gurreaud. The problem isnt that the rebuttal defended the organization, but that it bred an attitude among people on campus that Mr. Takis did not have the right to question the job being done by A.S.W.C.. I was in Shaw on Feb. 4 talking to other toward Garrcaud as a person, he is a student of this college and deserves to be heard. A.S.W.C. is supposed to represent students of the college. In black and white terms, the presidents job is to call and chair all Senate meetings, create any necessary committees, oversee the A.S.W.C. Office vote every week and to cast the on Senate issues. But it is also a position that Jhas been campaigned for, and once won, the president voluntarily becomes one of the most visible students on campus. Along with that will come criticism. Valid or not, that criticism has the right to be heard. Alex Smith, of Westminster College Earth Effort (W.C.E.E.), wrote a letter published in the Forum Feb. 9. He wrote to Takis, If you are unhappy about something, change it. While a letter to the editor is not the best forum for changing . A.S.W.C., I believe that Takis was attempting to start some changes through writing. Not every student on this campus can be on a committee. That is why we have elected tie-breaki- ng -- other students to represent the whole. A.S.W.C. is a vital link between students, faculty and the administration. It is structured like the government of this country, with senators representing the masses and an administration leading the whole. Whenever we, want change, or need our voices to be heard, we arc told to write our local congress representative or senator. We arent told to.shut up or run for office. To. put this into perspective, think of where we would be as a nation if only the people in office could effect changes. Women would not be voting or attending this college. Minorities would be suppressed beyond imagination. Sexual harassment by a prominent senator. would be acceptable. As long as the government has been set up to represent the masses, the masses have every right to voice concern, outrage, suggestions and praise. We are living with a government for the Continued on Page 8 What I Love About Westminster A Few Thoughts by Trevor Mavin Forum Brighten Your Day Tc the challenge to write something on the positive tip. Because I aim to please, here are some of the , many reasons why I like Westminster. Hope this article brightens your day. One of the things I love at Westminster is on the lack of sadomasochistic for this, campus. Most people arent grateful but I am. Imagine a horde of sweaty men in backless chaps and nipple clips cavorting in the courtyard. How could we study? I know I could hardly concentrate on a lecture while S&M fiends dashed through the hallways giggling hysterically, cracking whips and goosing each other with cattle prods. Thank God that . Steffi writer Recently Ive heard from a number of people who think my writing is a- little negative, a little cynical, maybe even a little To those of you who with this. Im glad you feel that way. agree In my defense, I must say I can be a little and pessimistic, butl never wanted to be Stuart Smalley, although I am good - mean-spirite- off-col- sub-cultu- re d. or enough, smartenoughanddoggone-it,peopl- e like me. Some question why I write at all? I write for three reasons: to titillate, to get peoplethinkingandto ventfrustration. Afew wonder if Im capable of writing anything positive. Obviously they missed the article cm Bambi and the Westminster professors. I cant hold that against them, but I can accept doesnt happen here. . For that matter, I think its pretty swell that Westminster doesnthave much problem with plumber s crack. Most guys on this campus do theirbesttokeeptheirposteriors fully covered. Thats neat! Say, while you were taking a test, a guys pants in front of you were riding a little low. Could you choose A, B or C with his vertical smile grinning back at you? If this college wants to stop grade inflation, maybe it should give plumbers free credits in order to entice them. Until that happens, Im proud to be a Parson. Another thing we should all be grateful for is the policy here at Westmin. If walked ever across the quad at the U, youve 11 know what I mean. It makes a mine field you look safe. But here at the big W, we walk without fear of where our feet land. As you know, Im having a rough time meeting the right woman as it is. I dont imagine my luck would improve much if I took her to eat in our beloved cafeteria with intestinally-processe- d Alpo dripping from my shoes. Its good to know youre safe from that kind of thing. Finally, I love the people here! Among my no-do- gs peers Ive experienced tolerance second to none. At other institutions, humorless, cliche-ridde- n people with no senses of humor and deep psychological scars would be chastised for writing to the editor. At Westminster, wc give them a patronizing pat on the back and encourage them for attempting a futile task, than I am. i.e., being a bigger smart-as- s You know, writing this article has given me a whole new outlook on life. Where I once saw only weeds, untamed roses now bloom. Thank you to all the people who pulled me from my nasty sarcastic shell. I feel like a new man! I feel refreshed, bom again. I hope you feel as great as I do. I hope this article has been the cherry on the cake of your day. Youre all wonderful, beautiful people. In fact. Im in such a mood Im actually meeting Stuart Smalley at Snelgroves for a malt this afternoon. Ahhh! What a wonderful world. March 9, 1993 life-affirmi- ng Forum Page 3 |
