Show Quality Snack Foods Can Schedule Week Wellness Compliment a Healthy Diet For general information, call Contrary to popular belief, quick and easy foods, eaten in moderation, can be a nutritious part of a diet, says Pat Scott, R.D., a registered dietitian at Cottonwood Hospital who serves as president of the Utah Dietetic Association. During March, which is National Nutrition Month, dietitians at Cottonwood Hospital are joining forces with the Utah Dietetic Association to remind consumers that alternative eating choices can be easily integrated into a healthy diet. For many Americans, eating in the 9 Os means no longer sharing leisurely meals at the kitchen table with family and friends. New food products, trends in food packaging and preparation, and lifestyle changes have lured Americans away from their traditional three meals a day into a growing pattern of fast food, convenience products, and restaurant dining. While todays consumers care about fitness, they may, in the interest of time, skip regular meals that are needed to provide fuel for bodily performance and strength, Scott says. As more and more of us snack and diet our way through the week, its important to make every food well-balanc- ed A cup of non-fa- t or plain yogurt with a sliced banana or raisins; Half a toasted English muffin with one ounce of cheese; Pre-cfresh vegetables stored in a refrigerator; or; Fruit (natures convenience food). Cottonwood Hospital dietitians offer these tips for restaurant diners who may find overeating to be a common problem: Dont feel obligated to clean your plate take home a doggie bag instead, or split your favorite entree with a friend; and Dont be afraid' to make special requests when dining out ask for vegetables without butter, a small green salad or fruit in place of french fries, and skim milk rather than cream for your coffee.
