Show Gold Medalist Phil Mahre Announces Retirement by Christopher E. Madding Forum staff writer Phil Mahre, 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist, revealed plans to retire at the end of the 90-9- 1 Professional Skiing Season. In a personal interview Mahre said, This will definitely be my last season. After placing fourth in Americas Opening Pro Cup Slalom Event, Mahre told a large group of reporters, I can do this for five or six more years. However, when I asked Mahre in a private interview about his new interest in auto racing, about his apparent lack of training for the ski season and whether he did intend to retire at the end of the 90-9- 1 season Mahre said, Definitely this will be my last year. I was considering not doing it this year, but I have contracts to fulfill. When speaking of contracts Mahre is referring to his sponsors for the pro cup series. While companies such as Marker, K2, Ultrex, and Sun Ice only sponsor his skiing profession, Zerex and Coors Light carry over to his car racing profession as well. Mahres interests seem to be more in the direction of auto racing rather than skiing these days. He and his identical twin brother, Steve, have similar interests in race cars. The Mahre brothers, in the summer months, are involved in the Firestone American City Racing League, where they cover the circuit in their Lola T89-9- 0 Sports 2000 race cars. When speaking of the 91 season Mahre said, We are moving into a new class of auto racing. Although the Mahres have tasted success in both fields, Americas eyes are still focused on their skiing careers. According to Mahre, the only training he put in for this years skiing was playing flag football with his friends. I only put in 1 1 slalom runs before the opening of the Pro Cup this year, said Mahre, after placing fourth in the slalom event. There is no lead time between sports, said Mahre. The only saving grace is that I am competitive all year. Mahre explained that coming out of cars to skiing is much harder than going from skiing to cars. One must step it up when moving from cars to skiing while skiing to cars is easi er, sai d Mahre . Skiing is more so on the edge. The Mahre brothers have been on three United States Olympic ski teams. Phil, a three-tim- e World Cup champion, took the silver Olympic medal at Lake Placid in 1980, then the gold four years later at Steve took the Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Olympic silver medal in 1984 and the World Cup gold in 82 at Schladming, Austria. They were on the U.S. ski team for ten years. Last year Phil finished third in the standings of the Pro Cup with a total of 490 points and a take home pay of $76,767. His total points were 104 less than last years number one ranked skier, Roland Pfeifer of Austria, who took home $221,816. Steve Mahre finished 38 in the standings taking home only $5,000. While Mahre plans retirement, he says his brother plans to stick it out a year or two more. He really hasnt done all he could in the Pro series. He had a few suggestions for the Pro Cup Officials, which included starting the season later and finishing it earlier, thus having fewer races and drawing more interest, with more cash prizes. By adding more money to a schedule of fewer races you would draw more people out to the Pro HERE'S WHY THE SMART MONEY AT Cup. When askedhow he felt abouthis fourth place finish he said, I expected to be in the first four, if not on the victory stand. Mahre went on to say, The saving grace is that I can only get better. As I was telling my tale of woe later that night, my mother commented that a few years earlier, Uncle Dick had had a dog he treated the same way as he did his cat. Didnt he used to have a wife he treated that way too? my brother asked. And then I felt pity. Being with Uncle Dick made me love my father. Parley Royal is pathetic. He has no ties, nothing to exist for except his cat, and the accomplishment he is most proud of is being a e pilot some 40 years ago. The fact that he is my fathers only brother somehow made me think that whatever happened to screw him up could just as easily have happened to my father, and it made me proud of my dad. I cant even explain why. By the way, about the story, it turns out that Uncle Dick chose his own nickname. As boys at home on their Little House on the Prairie farm at the height of the Great Depression, Wesley (my dad) and Parley Royal were playing and made up names for themselves, names that they decided would be better than Wesley and Parley Royal. People from my dads hometown still call him Ben, and as for Dick... well, maybe it was an omen. not-quit- |
